Lowepro BP 350 AW III Reviews

A robust comfortable backpack for a mid-sized Photography Kit!

The Lowepro ProTactic BP 350 AW III Backpack (Black, 17L) is a robust, very well-made, padded and comfortable backpack! It comes with a generous assortment of excellent dividers and 2 Molle Accessories that attach to the many Molle loops around the bag. The interior is thoughtfully constructed with felt that permits an almost endless variety of divider configurations. I am able to fit approximately 20 lbs of gear: a Nikon Z8 with Nikkor Z 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 S lens attached (with attached RRS QR tripod foot), a Sigma 10-18 f/2.8 DC DN, a Viltrox 27 f/1.2, a Fuji X-H2 body, and still have room for batteries, camera straps, filters, and other accessories, not to mention 2 zippered pockets and room for a laptop. The shoulder straps are very comfortable and include a strap and a removable waist belt. The 2 small external pockets and 2 side access pockets zippers are YKK with zipper pulls, though not the waterproof zips. That said, I think this backpack should survive a light rain even without the included rain cover. Lowepro knocked it out of the park with this backpack! Highly recommended!

Preliminary Observations and Measurements

I purchased the Lowepro ProTactic BP 350 AW III Backpack hoping to be able to use it on regional jets as carry on baggage. The specifications list the exterior dimensions as 18.5 x 12.4 x 7.48. My measurements agreed with these including empty side pockets and top handle except for the depth which I measured at closer to 8” versus 7.5”. With all the dividers included the bag weighed 5 lbs. 3.2 oz. on my accurate Ohaus scale. Because the bottom of the interior begins to slope up to form the sides, the deepest area of the interior is along the “spine.” The Canon Macro EF 100mm 2.8L IS measures 148mm from cap to cap. You can see it in the photos with the white box resting on top of it. Lining up the zipper teeth to get a horizontal shot, you can see that it sticks up about ½ cm above the top edge of the sides. Next to it is the Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8L II USM lens which measures 137mm in length from cap to cap. It is resting on the hook and loop tabs which may rob it of a mm or two in depth, but you can see that it fits within the depth of the case. When the iPad Air with it’s thin cover is placed in the tablet slot and the lenses mentioned are in their same location, the cover gaps about 1.25” when attempting to close it. It will zip up, however, without much effort. Even without the lenses present, but with the iPad in the slot, you still get a gap of about one inch as the cover rests on the dividers. That’s all with the pockets on the interior of the cover empty. I wouldn’t for example put glass filters in the pockets, plus a tablet in the tablet slot, and lenses on their ends greater than about 125mm in length in the case at the same time. If you want to put a lens attached to a body at the very top, you can see from the photos that the bag containing the rain cover will offer additional protection between the camera body and the exterior of the case. These are just my preliminary observations and measurements. Perhaps I can expand on it or add an additional review once I have had a chance to use it.

The Lowepro ProTactic BP 350 AW III Backpack (Black, 17L) is just large enough for those lenses and the Canon R3. The Canon R1 is too tall.
