Is I have a crop-sensor (ASP-C) canon mirrorless like the R7 what would the disadvantages be buying this lens?
The Canon RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM Lens (Canon RF) is fully compatible with the Canon R7 camera. The R7 can use either RF or RF-S lenses. In general an RF-S lens is smaller and lighter weight than a comparably RF lens but currently there is no 24mm RF-S lens.

Optically, how does this compare to the much older FD 24mm f1.4 L, which would need an adapter?
The RF 24mm f/1.4 L is going to be much sharper than a FD 24mm f/1.4 L lens. The RF 24mm only works on Canon RF Mirrorless bodies.

The Canon RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM Lens comes with the Canon LP1219 Soft Lens Case. The other Canon L series lenses you mentioned also come with a corresponding soft case.
