Leica Cine Play 1 — A Professional’s Take

I’ve purchased 3 of these projectors — one for a friend, one for a client, and one for my own home cinema. That should tell you something right there. By day, I’m a pro video engineer. I operate the largest and most expensive projectors on the market — Panasonic, Barco, and Christie. So when Leica claimed the Cine Play 1 delivers color beyond Rec 2020, I was genuinely skeptical. Even $70,000 projectors sometimes fall short of that color spectrum. I tested it on a 160” screen in a fully dark home cinema. Here’s what I found: Where it shines: Color spectrum — Stunning. On par with what you’d expect from a professional cinema environment. I didn’t think I’d be saying that about a projector at this price point. Focus uniformity — Pristine, edge to edge. If you know projectors, you know this is genuinely hard to achieve. The Leica Summicron lens earns its reputation here. Brightness uniformity — Excellent. The edges of a 160” screen are nearly as bright as the center, which is rare. Where it falls short: 3,000 lumens is its ceiling. In a bright room or with lights on, the image suffers noticeably. This projector belongs in a controlled light environment. No ceiling mount included. I had to fabricate my own mounting solution — a hassle that shouldn’t exist at this price. Fan noise is louder than I’d expect for a projector this compact. A pro tip worth reading: The projector has auto-alignment and auto-focus, but I strongly recommend positioning it so that manual zoom and focus adjustments are all you need — minimizing corner and geometry correction. Here’s why: when you project from an angle, pixels land on the screen as trapezoids instead of squares. That alone degrades image quality. On top of that, when the projector is tilted, the distance between the lens and the screen is uneven, which means focus can’t be uniform across the entire image. Place it parallel to the screen. Enjoy!
