Purchased primarily to help locate birds in marsh grass and trees. It has been helpful in that regard; however note that it cannot see through vegetation, water, or glass. I most enjoy using it at night when I go outside and look for critters. Have spotted raccoons, squirrels, deer, owls, fox, mice, bats, and insects, even birds perched in trees. The original software started at 1X, but an update reset the start at the advertised 2.5X with digital enhancement to 20X. I would have preferred 1X-10X as definition is reduced with increasing magnification. I use the camera function regularly, but viewing the pics on my phone is a little cumbersome (could be improved). Also note that the camera has a delay so it might take a couple of seconds to capture the pic. Overall I have really enjoyed using the thermal and use it most nights, if only for a few minutes to see into the darkness. I should also note that when properly focused, I can differentiate trees by bark and/or leaves. Watched a mouse walking around a tree at approximately 60 feet when it stopped at the tree base. A minute later it moved away but I could still see the spot where it stopped as the brightness slowly faded over several minutes.
