Why this common mistake the flash on the right ...
Why this common mistake the flash on the right side ? when "reading" photo left to right we see the shadows before the subject
The Panasonic ZS99 Digital Camera (Black) (B&H# PADCZS99K) does continue in the style of certain other Panasonic (and other) cameras by locating the flash on the right side of the camera. (By the “right side” I mean on the right side from the perspective of the photographer who is actually behind the camera.) Having said that, every possible flash location (e.g. above, on the side, etc.) does carry with it both advantages and disadvantages. While we cannot speak for Panasonic's design team, we have found that the chosen location is an option that works well for many users and in many situations. For example, the fact that the flash is integrated into the body (and not sticking out and above the camera when being used) may reduce the chance of it being damaged. Also, the off-axis location of the flash definitely reduces visible red eye in the photos. Moreover, that location reduces the incidence of a shadow being cast by the lens on subjects that are photographed in close proximity while the lens is fully extended. Finally, its side location results in more light from the flash reaching the area right in front of the lens, a feature that is especially important when taking close-up photos in (near) macro mode when subjects may be as close as 1.2" (3cm) from the lens' front element.
