Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/3.5 Type I Overview

The numbered, limited edition, gray and chrome APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/3.5 Type I VM, by Voigtlander, is a normal-length, manual-focus lens designed to take advantage of the inherent strengths of a rangefinder camera system, including an especially small, inconspicuous design, intuitive operation, and sharp, high-contrast rendering. This lens also holds the elite distinction of being part of the APO-LANTHAR series of optically-refined, apochromatic lenses that use anomalous partial dispersion glass to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations and produce clear, color-accurate imagery.

Type I Highlights
  • Apochromatic design includes ight elements in six groups, four of which are made of anomalous partial-dispersion glass to achieve uncompromising optical performance.
  • Manual focus design with a high-accuracy, all-metal helicoid for high-precision control.
  • Close-up minimum focusing distance of 1.5'; there is a tactile "bump" when focusing the lens closer than 2.3', signaling the limit of the rangefinder system's focusing range and that live view or scale-based focusing should be used.
  • Despite being styled after vintage collapsible rangefinder lenses, this lens has a rigid, non-collapsing lens barrel.
  • The brass and aluminum build provides the user with a heavy-body feel.
  • This limited edition version of the lens comes with its production number engraved on the lens body.
  • Optimized for either film or digital M-mount rangefinder cameras and mirrorless cameras.

Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/3.5 Type I Reviews

Great lens if you get a good copy

It's a well performing lens if you get a good copy. I purchased a Type I and Type II, and both were duds... one had horizontal asymmetry, so a slight swing of the focus plain, together with a front focus. The other had a tilt, with one side of the focus plane being quite nervous while the other was very clean and crisp. Ergonomics of both lenses are odd, and require getting used to, but that doesn't take all too long. I prefer the Type II personally but the unusual filter thread size is frustrating. Also, unlike Leica 50mm lenses which tend to be 51-52mm in focal length, these are noticeably wider in field of view. It will record images slightly wider than Framelines indicate. All in all, my experience with Voigtlander's more recent lenses is that quality variation has gotten worse. I've also had a terribly performing Skopar 50/2.5. So I would recommend buying with the option to return if the lenses are not performing properly.

AMAZING

I use this lens for two things and it is absolutely stellar at both. 1 street, this is the absolute king of the street. 2nd I use my M10P for taking product photography with Live view and this is an incredible combo fot that with close focus. This is a lens I will never sell it is so perfect for these two applications.

Does this olive color match the Leica m11-p safari?
Asked by: Robert
While the olive finish on the Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/3.5 Type I VM lens (Leica M, Olive and Chrome) is designed to be aesthetically pleasing with Leica cameras, it is a unique finish and does not have an identical color match to the specific olive-green paint of the Leica M11-P Safari Rangefinder Camera.
