Panasonic ZS99 Overview

Panasonic ZS99 Digital Camera (Silver)
An Intuitive Pocket Companion
Built with travel and everyday use in mind, the Lumix ZS99 Digital Camera from Panasonic is a versatile point-and-shoot marrying both form and function for new and experienced photographers alike. Designed to be as sleek as possible, the ZS99 still manages to incorporate a 1/2.3" 20.3MP High-Sensitivity MOS sensor, a Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x optical zoom lens, a tilting rear LCD screen optimized for selfies, and a built-in flash to deliver high-quality images with ease.
20.3MP 1/2.3" MOS Sensor
A large 1/2.3" 20.3MP High-Sensitivity MOS sensor realizes rich image quality with reduced noise and high sensitivity to an expanded ISO 6400. The sensor and processor combination also avails continuous shooting rates of 30 fps at 8MP in the 4K Photo modes.
Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 30x Zoom Lens
The long-reaching 30x Leica DC Vario-Elmarit zoom offers a 24-720mm equivalent focal length range along with a maximum aperture range of f/3.3-6.4. The lens construction incorporates five double-sided aspherical elements to minimize spherical aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for increased image clarity and sharpness.

Benefitting the reach of the lens is a powerful 5-axis Hybrid O.I.S. system that compensates for a variety of camera movements for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. This image stabilization system also enables a unique Level Shot function that automatically detects the horizontal line of the recording image and keeps it level during shooting, regardless of camera tilt, helping you to achieve greater shooting stability.
4K Video and Photo Modes
The sensor and processor combination also enables 4K video recording at both 30p in the MP4 format at 100 Mbps. Full HD 1080p and HD 720p recording is also possible, as well as high-speed Full HD recording with 120 fps slow-motion playback.

Besides video, the 4K capabilities also permit recording 8MP stills at 30 fps in a trio of ways:

  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 15 minutes, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.
Post Focus and Focus Stacking
Another attribute of the 4K capabilities is a unique focusing method called Post Focus. Working in conjunction with the 49-area contrast-detection focusing system, Post Focus records imagery as a 4K MP4 file at 30 fps and shifts the specific point of focus throughout the burst shooting in order to offer a range of distinct focusing ranges to choose from. During playback, via the camera's touchscreen, you can then tap the specific region of the image you wish to be in focus and an 8MP JPEG file will be created. Multiple individual files with different points of focus can be created from the original burst and focusing assist functions can also be used to gain even more precise control over the specific in-focus region.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • A tilting rear 3.0" 1.84m-dot touchscreen LCD monitor allows for live view shooting, image review, and intuitive menu navigation. The tilting screen flips up for front-facing photos and video, with selfie timers included in the firmware.
  • The USB-C port allows you to directly charge the battery and offers high-speed, tethered data transfer.
  • A host of manual controls offer simple, direct control over a variety of oft-used camera settings, including a control ring surrounding the lens that can be configured to adjust zoom, shutter speed, manual focus, and ISO sensitivity.
  • Built-in Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi allows you to wirelessly share photos and movies to linked smartphones and tablets for direct sharing online. The camera also features a Send to Smartphone button for seamless and immediate sharing.

  • In-camera raw file processing is possible, allowing you to adjust color space (Adobe RGB/sRGB), white balance, exposure compensation, Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, contrast, highlight/shadow values, saturation, noise reduction, Intelligent Resolution, and sharpness.

Panasonic ZS99 Reviews

Wonderful little camera

By Simon
Rated 5 out of 5

What I really, really wanted was the Sony RX100 VII but also what I really wanted 400 mm zoom on a point and shoot. I was traveling and wanted to go more lightweight than big and bold, leaving my 400mm lens home. The Sony had everything I wanted except the 400mm. Although the ZS99 does not have a viewfinder, only the screen, I am getting used to it. As someone who wears glasses, trying to use the manual focus on the screen, is a pain, but I rarely use the manual focus feature. This camera takes GREAT shots. I put some of it down to the Leica lens and some down to the sensor - between the two the images it creates are good. I have given it a good beating, it fits in my pockets and goes pretty much everywhere with me. The software to get photos onto your phone is really really good and has some great features. And getting the photos onto a computer is as simple as plug a cable between the two and move them! I have found that Sony's Play Memories Home works great -just start with a fresh, new memory card to avoid the mess I made using one I was already using in another camera! Will it replace my Sony? No. But it is a wonderful companion, and great for street and holiday photography. I have done some side-by-side shots in low light. The Sony ISO was between 2500 and 6500 and the Lumix was steady at ISO 1600. Both were shooting Auto. I hope this helps. I really like the Lumix.

Why this common mistake the flash on the right side ? when "reading" photo left to right we see the shadows before the subject
Asked by: Dominique
The Panasonic ZS99 Digital Camera (Black) (B&H# PADCZS99K) does continue in the style of certain other Panasonic (and other) cameras by locating the flash on the right side of the camera. (By the “right side” I mean on the right side from the perspective of the photographer who is actually behind the camera.) Having said that, every possible flash location (e.g. above, on the side, etc.) does carry with it both advantages and disadvantages. While we cannot speak for Panasonic's design team, we have found that the chosen location is an option that works well for many users and in many situations. For example, the fact that the flash is integrated into the body (and not sticking out and above the camera when being used) may reduce the chance of it being damaged. Also, the off-axis location of the flash definitely reduces visible red eye in the photos. Moreover, that location reduces the incidence of a shadow being cast by the lens on subjects that are photographed in close proximity while the lens is fully extended. Finally, its side location results in more light from the flash reaching the area right in front of the lens, a feature that is especially important when taking close-up photos in (near) macro mode when subjects may be as close as 1.2" (3cm) from the lens' front element.

Pop up Flash ? No eye finder ? It seems not a lot different with the "old" Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX90V ?
Asked by: Dominique
The Panasonic ZS99 Digital Camera (Black) has a front built-in flash. There is no viewfinder in this unit. Panasonic Lumix just released the camera. It has a higher video and photo performance than the performance of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX90V Digital Camera, which was released approximately 9 years ago.
