Sigma BF Overview

Beauty is Radically Simple
An intuitive tool designed to radically simplify imagemaking, the 24.6MP full-frame Sigma BF Mirrorless Camera, reimagines the high-end digital camera interface to emphasize ease of use. The L-mount, hybrid-AF body also boasts 6K video capabilities, resulting in a camera that produces high-quality imagery at will.
Sleek, Intuitive Design
The Sigma BF marks a turning point in mirrorless camera design. Every point of user interface from body to screen has been reconceived to streamline the image creation process, allowing users unprecedented access to the beauty unfolding in front of the lens.
Streamlined UI
The primary user interface of the live-view rear touchscreen has been redesigned for distraction-free shooting, where exposure settings like shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, EV compensation, and color mode all find their natural home. The live-view itself has been streamlined to allow shooters maximum focus on their subject, while a small status monitor above the rear dial pad clearly displays the active settings. All other options and settings are accessible via three simple menu screens.
Physical Design
The Sigma BF's forward-looking physical design concentrates all controls into just three buttons: a dial, a shutter release, and a power button. A rear dial pad allows further navigational control. All of these physical controls are pressure-sensitive haptics-driven, giving the user intuitive response to their touch. The camera also features a first-of-its-kind "unibody" build, as each camera is carved from a single block of aluminum, yielding a balanced, uniform weight distribution. A thumb grip in the upper right corner adds a small but crucial ergonomic element for handling the camera.
Performance
A 24.6MP full-frame, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor powers the camera's high-end imagery. The camera has a wide dynamic range, a native ISO sensitivity of 100-102400 expandable on the low end to ISO 6, and the large sensor which benefits both low-light performance and low depth-of-field effects. Continuous shooting is possible at up to 8 fps, and the camera produces 14-bit DNG lossless RAW files in addition to JPEGs. A hybrid phase detection and contrast detection autofocus ensures quick and accurate focusing. Additionally, remote shutter release is possible with the optional CR-51 cable release.
Internal Storage
One of the notable features of the Sigma BF is its 230GB of internal storage, translating to more than 14,000 JPEG files, 4,300 uncompressed RAW files, or 2.5 hours of video. Additionally, a USB-C port offers data-transfer speeds of 10 Gb/s for external storage.
Video Capabilities
The Sigma BF can record video in up to 6K 30 fps and reaches up to 120 fps when shot in Full HD. The camera also supports L-Log color grading and HVEC encoding. Electronic image stabilization is supported when shooting video, benefitting smooth footage capture, and on a full battery the camera can record continuously for an hour. A built-in microphone atop the camera captures stereo sound, with support for an external microphone or headphone output. The USB-C terminal also allows users to output video and use the Sigma BF as a webcam.
L-Mount Compatibility
Sigma is a member of the L-Mount Alliance, and the BF's L-mount for lenses affords users access to the broad range of high-quality lenses from Sigma, Panasonic, and Leica.
Color Modes
The Sigma BF comes pre-loaded with 13 different Color modes, allowing users to apply color filters to their imagery for expanded creativity: Standard, Rich, Calm, Powder Blue, Warm Gold, Teal and Orange, FOV Classic Blue, FOV Classic Yellow, Forest Green, Sunset Red, Cinema, 709 Look, and Monochrome.

Sigma BF Reviews

Perfect Travel / Fun Camera

Most YouTubers completely miss the point of the Sigma BF. This camera isn’t about spec-sheets; it’s about the experience of photography. The design is absolutely beautiful, but more importantly, the images coming out of it are incredible. There’s no shortage of lenses, the camera takes up almost no space, and the menu system is refreshingly simple and intuitive. The built-in filters are genuinely fun to use, and being able to go straight from the camera to your phone or tablet with USB-C makes the workflow effortless. You can quickly edit in Lightroom or just enjoy the filtered JPGs right out of camera. For the price, it’s honestly hard to beat. Sigma created something different here, and photographers who actually use the camera will understand it immediately.

A Fascinating Camera

I'm very glad I took the risk and bought this camera (and lens: 35mm F2 iSeries). There is much to make the BF different from all the other brands and much of it has already been covered in reviews and videos. But I'd like to add one thing that I haven't seen pointed out. I really appreciate how my setting changes can be instantly seen on screen as I change them. There is no backing out of the menu screen to return to a live view and then see the change as is necessary on many top brands. BF menus reside on the live view. This is very helpful, more intuitive, and little mentioned. Some of the common complaints about the BF haven't soured my joy using it. I haven't suffered the loss of one photo from the lack of stabilization in my typical daylight landscape shots. But I started photography with non-stabilized cameras decades before they were common and the absence doesn't bother me. I prefer viewfinders, but I've gotten used to using screens on those without them. In really bright conditions the BF screen can be a little difficult, but like my Ricoh GRIIIx, not so impossible as you might to be led to believe. I shoot with Sony, OM, GFX, Ricoh, and sometimes Canon: all suit my photography. But none have the unique characteristics of the Sigma BF. I use it every time the 35mm is needed. I'll certainly be getting more lenses for it. The whole system is a joy to use. Build quality is superb, operation is unique and a real pleasure, and the design is beautiful (mine is silver). Love the BF.

Which Sigma series (DG or DG-DN) is recommended for the Sigma BF?
Asked by: A
the I Series primes are particularly well suited to pairing with the BF in terms of size and aesthetic, these would be the DG Contemporary prime lenses. the smaller ones would be the 17mm f4, 24mm f3.5, 45mm f2.8 and 90mm 2.8; the f'2's are a little bigger but a little more flexible and include a 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 65mm. cheers!
