Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG Contemporary Overview

Compact Mid-Telephoto Portrait Prime
Perfect for portraiture, the Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG Contemporary Lens is an especially compact mid-telephoto prime offering a selective field of view and modest maximum aperture that's an ideal combination for headshots, group shots, close-up shots, and compressed landscapes while remaining nimble enough for everyday shooting.

The 90mm focal length is a classic narrow field of view that flatters portrait subjects and the f/2.8 maximum aperture is bright enough for depth of field control and working in available lighting without adding unwanted weight and size to the lens design. Alternatively, the compact 90mm is also a beneficial lens for landscape shooters looking to make more condensed and focused compositions and highlight specific subjects from a distance.
Sigma I Series Lens
  • Contemporary Line lens features a compact design that measures approximately 2.5 x 2.4" and a weight of just over 10 oz, making it portable enough for everyday shooting needs without compromising on optics or speed.
  • Internal focusing design pairs with a stepping AF motor for responsive and fast focusing performance that's suitable for both stills and video applications.
  • Optical design includes five SLD elements and one aspherical elements, to optimize sharpness and limit aberrations, and a Super Multi-Layer Coating that controls flare and reflections.
  • Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
  • Dust and splash-resistant construction with a brass bayonet mount for ensured accuracy and durability.
The Sigma I Series is a group of full-frame-compatible lenses emphasizing the ideal mixture of performance and compactness for mirrorless shooters. Combining high optical performance with a stylish and sleek design, these lenses are well-matched to contemporary mirrorless cameras and shooters who prioritize lenses with a high degree of usability, portability, and capability.
  • I series lenses have an all-metal construction, including precision-cut aluminum parts on the barrel that offers an elegant finish that's equally durable. Metal materials are also used throughout the internal construction for added robustness and reliability that is inspired by Sigma's Cine lens lineup.
  • Knurled aperture and focus rings, along with an included knurled metal lens hood, further contribute to a pleasing tactile experience.
  • In addition to knurled details, the lens features an intuitive AF/MF switch and the aperture ring includes an 'A' position for quick switching to an aperture-priority exposure mode.
  • I series lenses include both a conventional plastic lens cap along with a magnetic metal lens cap for more streamlined and minimal attachment method.
  • Magnetic lens cap is compatible with optional CH-11 Magnetic Cap Holder.

Just what I need

I bought this lens for a number of reasons: it is lightweight, sharp, small, has auto/manual option, and compact. I can pack it along with two other similar lenses plus my Sony A7RC in a swing pack with a total weight under 5 pounds. This is perfect for street and nature photography while hiking.

Beautiful lens & images

Not only is the lens itself beautiful and well-made but the images out of it are fantastic! They are very sharp with great color and contrast! On top of that everything from the way the lens was made to how it was packaged was done with great care. It includes a magnetic lens cap and a regular cap plus a beautiful small booklet about the lens and Sigma. I love everything about this lens and purchase and the images I’m getting from this lens.

what the difference between this and the Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary?
Asked by: Gary
The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG Contemporary Lens (Sony E, Black) (B&H# SI9028BE) is Sigma's new name for the Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E (B&H# SI9028E) with a new font and without the "DN" designation as all of their new lenses are for mirrorless cameras. The DN designation was previously used to indicate that the lenses were made only for mirrorless cameras, but the need to do so has passed as they are no longer making new models of lenses for SLRs.
