iBasso DX340 Overview

Designed for musical purists and tinkering audiophiles alike, the DX340 Portable Hi-Res Digital Audio Player from iBasso is a versatile high-end mobile digital audio player (or DAP) that allows for customization while producing pristine audio clarity. For audiophile-level detail, DX340 is equipped with 128 8E PWM DACs, which are 4 sets of 16 discrete cascaded 8E PWM-DACs per channel (L+, L-, R+, R-). This achieves accurate decoding and a THD+N level of -119 dB. These DACs are supported by an FPGA-Master 3.0 audio system that works with a Snapdragon 665 SoC for PCM 32-bit / 768 kHz and Native DSD512 playback. The audio player can be customized with swappable AMP cards and powered by a sophisticated dual-battery system. All of this and more in a sleek 316 stainless chassis with 6" AMOLED display.

FPGA-Master 3.0 Audio System
At the heart of the DX340 is iBasso's FPGA-Master 3.0 audio system, which works directly with the Snapdragon 665 SoC and its 8GB of RAM for incredibly accurate timing and seamless signal processing. The system directly requests audio from the SoC to maintain signal integrity and synchronize and generate all audio clocks using dual Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators. This allows for a synchronized single clock source. The system also incorporates a harmonic algorithm that makes odd and even harmonic adjustment possible. In the end, all components of the system work to come together for a flawless listening experience.
Customizable Sound
The bundled AMP15 card can be easily swapped out with other optional AMP1x series AMP cards, letting you customize the DX340 to your personal preferences. One example is the AMP16, which provides the warmth of tube-based amplifiers. The default AMP15 that's included has eight BUF634 amplifiers to support an optional 12 VDC power supply. When used in this way, amp power goes from +/- 8 to 12V, and unlocks Super Gain Mode. Under Super Gain Mode, output power can go up to 2150mW + 2150mW at 32 ohms, making the DX340 compatible with demanding headphones and IEMs.
Dual Battery Design
Offering a sophisticated power management system, the DX340 features a dual battery design. The system is made to power the digital and analog components separately, each with an independent charging system. This is meant to mitigate signal interference and maximize the purity of your audio sources. To ease battery management, a single indicator is provided to cover both charging and power monitoring statuses. As an added feature to preserve the life of this system, if you pair the DX340 with adequate USB-based power, the internal batteries will be bypassed to only run on external power. Together, both batteries supply the DX340 with up to 11 hours of playback.
Broad Connectivity
You have multiple options when it comes to enjoying your music on the go with the DX340. You can choose wired solutions using the DAP's single-ended 3.5mm port, balanced 4.4mm port, or 3.5mm coaxial (USB OTG) output. When used with a PC as a USB DAC, you can enjoy ultralow latency in movies and games with support for PCM 32-bit/768 kHz and Native DSD512 audio. The DX340 also offers wireless streaming options using Bluetooth 5.0 or dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac).

  • Dual AK4499EX DAC
  • 256GB of UFS 2.1 high-speed internal storage
  • MicroSD card slot supports cards up to 2TB in size

Those Little Things

You know how they say it's those little things that make a difference. When it comes to the new iBasso DX340 nothing could be more true. I have several DAPs in my collection from numerous companies, and I must say the DX340 is the best I have owned to date. I own a DX180 so I knew what to expect as far as iBasso build quality, but what I didn't expect was the pure difference in sound. If I had to sum it up in one word, I would say the sound is natural. You can actually hear the various placements of instruments as they were recorded in the studio. The vocals are great. Very clear up front but not overpowering. The wide theater stands out the most. It's almost like you're standing in front of the live stage. I have heard more expensive DAPs that don't begin to compare with the DX340. It's definitely not a portable pocket DAP but you can tote it around in a backpack or handbag. It weights around one pound due primarily to is stainless steel case which is machined from a block of 316 stainless steel. If you are looking for a DAP that will make you feel at home with your music, this is it. It's worth its weight in stainless steel. I love it!
