Rane Commercial MA 3 Overview

The Rane MA 3 is a three-channel amplifier designed to operate in commercial environments, such as paging, foreground music and background music distribution. Up to three optional 40 watt, 70.7 volt or 100 volt constant-voltage audio transformers may be installed inside the amplifier, eliminating the need for external wiring or transformer mounting.

The MA 3 uses a conventional linear power supply with toroidal transformer. This configuration minimizes the emissions associated with switching supplies and noisier transformer designs. The power supply features independent secondary supplies for each channel, minimizing load regulation interaction and crosstalk.

Thermal management is accomplished in the MA 3 with a sealed heat-tunnel design incorporating low velocity forced air and large aperture openings. This design minimizes the noise usually associated with forced air-cooling and eliminates the need for an air filter. Forced air-cooling allows the amplifier to operate reliably in harsh environments and avoid the buildup of heat in unventilated racks associated with passive convection cooling.

Dynamic protection circuitry completely safeguards each channel against over-voltage, under-voltage, overloads, transients from inductive loads, thermal runaway and instantaneous temperature peaks. Biasing is not allowed to occur when an under-voltage condition exists, reducing turn on and turn off transients. Fast-response limiters allow the MA 3 to tolerate up to 20dB of overdrive into 8 and 4 ohm loads while holding THD below 1 percent. This means no loss of speech intelligibility or harsh clipping, and greatly increases the dynamic range of the system without the use of external limiters.

The peak-responding, load-adaptive meters of the MA 3 accurately indicate the remaining headroom. The meters are helpful in setting system levels and indicating signal compression. Internally selectable 80Hz high-pass filters offer protection against over excursion of small bookshelf speakers and saturation of distribution transformers at low frequencies.

Rane Commercial MA 3 Reviews

Rane MA3 Finally Purchased after 25 Years

After +25 years of researching and finally having a 'need' for the Rane MA3, it is finally here. This time the 'need' was mine! In the 90s I had several occasions to use the Rane MA6 amplifiers and repair them. Anytime I worked a new project, I always started with the Rane amps to see if they would be a good fit. They were a pleasure to use and easy to repair. The only downside of the newer MA3 is it is now SMD and lead free solder making it the next level of difficulty for self-repairs. Such is most of the industry. This amp is built like a tank and weighs close to 30 lbs! The front panel, bottom plate and rear panel are one piece -- perfectly rolled. The main filter caps are Nichicon and there's a nicely sized toroidal transformer. Each secondary after rectification holds about +33/-33 vdc. It is a shame to end such a fine line of amplifiers. This Rane MA3 is going to be the uppers amp for my stereo listening room. There is a clarity to amplifiers with the LM3886 chips that isn't available in other classes and topologies of amplifiers. I hope to keep it longer than 6 months. My last new amp was needed in a project and the client is happy and doesn't want to swap it out. I do miss the JBL CSA 2120 as it served well as lower cabs and upper equally well. But with the Rane MA3, I'm back to fully analog amplification. No EMP is going to stop my music! I'm driving the amp with a balanced preamplifier which gives it the most open and accurate reproduction of the audio. I briefly fed it unbalanced signals (during setup) and it was just anemic and prone to humm. The MA3 is a little picky and the humm was controllable with a EBTECH Line Level Shifter. I also tried the EBTECH Humm Eliminator 8 channel but it wasn't as successful. Different transformers. That was a four hour rabbit hole of making new cables to solve a problem not needing to be solved --just stick with quality balanced connection. The Fan! Being a commercial amp, it does have a fan so the heat sink size could be reduced for the three LM3886 chips. I'm now designing a dampened sound tube to allow air flow but cut the noise. If it were in the a/v closet it wouldn't be an issue. I think it is worth the effort since the amp is nearly perfect. Since there are very few remaining new units you could always get a used one(discontinued) They just don't break often. This unit was manufactured in 2015. . .It has been sitting in a warehouse for over a decade -- probably like the Ark of the Covenant It is really a NOS amp. . .the once clear packing tape is now the yellow brittle expected from the age of the unit. Like the boxes one stores in the attic. I'm glad to press this classic into service. Almost don't want anyone to come listen as they will want one also. This first couple hours were a little rough but I was out for most of the day and I ran pink noise into dummy loads for a good 8 hours and they smoothed out. Caps also needed the charge & discharging to work back into shape. Fastest break in of an amp I've done. Best wishes to all.

HI, Is it possible to power my 200 watts speaker using Rane MA3?
Asked by: Ronald
This amp is 40-watts per channel, so it would not power 200 watt speakers. I would suggest a 200 watt amp, such as the ART SLA-2 - 2-Channel Rackmount Power Amplifier (200W Per Channel at 8 Ohms), BH #ARSLA2.

Asked by: Mike
Yes the Rane Commercial MA 3 Amplifier is directly compatible with the Ashly AW 8.2T+ Passive 8" 2-Way Installation Speaker with Transformer (White, Pair) for conference room sound reinforcement.

Hi,Would it be possible to power my 200 watts speaker using RANE MA3?
Asked by: Ronald
This amp is not powerful enough at 40 watts per channel to power a 200 watt speaker. The Lab.Gruppen LUCIA 240/1-70 Mono Amplifier for 70V Installations (1 x 240W), B&H # LAL240170US would be good for one speaker. If you have 2 speakers , then I would look at the QSC SPA Series ENERGY STAR 2-Channel Power Amplifier (200W/Channel), B&H # QSSPA2200.

Is this an original version of the amplifier with the fan speed control? The product image silkscreen seems to indicate this is NOS.
Asked by: Chris
No, this is the current version of the Rane MA 3 Three-Channel Power Amplifier which does not offer control of the fan speed. The earlier version did have a two-way switch that allowed you to run the fan at normal or fast speed. According to Rane, it was seldom necessary, if ever, to run the fan at the fast speed, except perhaps in very hot environments when used for heavily compressed music into a demanding load. The downside of running the fan at the fast speed was noise. For that reason the current version does not include fan speed control and provides thermal management with a sealed heat-tunnel design incorporating low velocity forced-air and large aperture openings. This design minimizes the noise usually associated with forced air cooling and eliminates the need for an air filter. Forced air-cooling allows the amplifier to operate reliably in harsh environments and avoid the buildup of heat in unventilated racks.
