Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro Overview

Add a desktop shuttle with a comprehensive video playback interface to your live production with this HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro from Blackmagic Design. The HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro features a compact design that allows you to run multiple I/O and connect to a computer or ATEM switch to control media playback using its 7" touchscreen display, large search dial, and buttons. It also features a built-in teleprompter for using text files without requiring third-party software.

The Shuttle 4K Pro runs Blackmagic OS, supports ProRes and DNx file formats, and is compatible with a wide range of editing software such as Premiere Pro, Avid, and DaVinci Resolve. It can also be used to stream H.264/265 video to streaming services such as YouTube or Vimeo. Record video using its SD card slot, M.2 PCIe card slot, or USB-C output to an optional drive or connect to the Blackmagic MultiDock to record to multiple SSDs. The Ethernet port provides external control and file transfers over a network.

Mastering Recorder
With support for H.264/265, ProRes, and DNx files, you can record true broadcast masters. You can even select between PCM or AAC audio. That's great for higher-quality mastering when used with ATEM Mini switchers. You get everything needed to send shows to broadcasters and for uploading to streaming services like YouTube.
Media Player
The large search dial lets you visually browse your clip library; you can then use the previous clip button to cue the start of the clip. After playing, you can use the clip button to stop the playback at the end of the clip. ATEM switchers can even remote control HyperDeck Shuttle via Ethernet.
Built-In 7" Touchscreen
A 7" touch interface allows for interactive control, built-in monitoring, and menu adjustment. Buttons for playback, pause, and recording functions, as well as a mini playback timeline for clip scrubbing, make for an intuitive control experience. A heads-up display (HUD) overlays timecode, media status, and audio meter information. Enable full broadcast scopes like focus assist and RGB exposure histogram. Settings can be changed via the on-screen menus, and you can save and load 3D LUTs.
Traditional Broadcast Deck Controls
HyperDeck Shuttle includes a control panel that's very fast to use, and the buttons are similar to a traditional broadcast deck. Simply press the record button, and you will instantly start recording the video input to a file. The large machined metal search dial supports shuttle, jog, and scroll so you can find clips fast. Plus, all deck control functions can be triggered remotely using the Ethernet network. Use the intuitive touchscreen interface to toggle different visual overlays and scrub media files to find what you need.
Record to Internal or External Network Storage
HyperDeck Shuttle has been designed to record directly to network storage, keeping all your media in a central place. Plus, the HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro model has space for M.2 flash storage cards, so the network storage is built in. This means any editing system can just log into the HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro and access all the media in one location. DaVinci Resolve can also edit media while it's being recorded.
Supports SD Cards and USB-C Disks
The HyperDeck Shuttle supports recording to standard SD Cards and UHS-II Cards. You can also record on external USB disks, which can be instantly unplugged and transported. When using H.264, the files are so incredibly small you get very long recordings even on smaller, low-cost cards. This means you can record up to 157 hours of H.264 in 1080p59.94 on a 1 TB card for over 6 days of recorded content. The USB-C expansion port lets you plug in an external flash disk for recording. You can even add a Blackmagic MultiDock 10G that has four separate SSD media slots, so you can add compatibility with SSD media. There are also options for managing external disks in the settings menu.
Popular ProRes, DNx, and H.264/265 Files
HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro supports the most popular codecs in use today, including broadcast-quality DNx and ProRes file formats. You also get space-saving H.264/265 when recording in NTSC, PAL, 720p, 1080p, or 1080i interlaced formats. That means you get tight 60:1 to 285:1 compression ratios for very small files at full broadcast quality. Plus, you can choose uncompressed PCM or even AAC audio when uploading files to YouTube. HyperDeck Shuttle supports both ExFAT on Windows and HFS+ on Mac disk formats, allowing disks to be mounted and read on both platforms. You also get support for recording long events into a single video file.
Video and Control Connections
The HDMI input can be connected to cameras and switchers such as ATEM Mini, and the HDMI output can be connected to monitors for presentations or ATEM Mini switchers as a long-form media player. Additional connectivity includes an SDI monitor output, reference I/O ports, 4K HDMI I/O ports, an SDI input, two SDI outputs, an SDI loop output, a remote I/O interface, and a headphone jack for monitoring. The rear panel also includes a 12 VDC power input, and a power supply is included. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection allows control and remote file uploads.
Multi-Rate SDI Connections
The HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro model includes the latest 12G-SDI video connections. 12G-SDI is multi-rate, so a single connection can connect to SD, HD, and UHD equipment using up to DCI 4K resolutions. There is also support for both level A and level B when working in 3G-SDI rates.
HDMI Compatibility with ATEM Mini Switchers
With built-in HDMI input and output, you can connect to consumer cameras, monitors, televisions, video projectors, and even ATEM Mini switchers. The HDMI connections will automatically switch video standards to handle both SD and UHD 4K equipment.
10G Ethernet Network
With its 10G Ethernet connectivity, the HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro can access built-in HyperDeck M.2 storage over your network. You can also transfer files via an easy-to-use HTTP/S web interface or an FTP client. For broadcast automation control, HyperDeck uses the Ethernet connection and a simple text-based protocol, which you can test with a simple telnet client. A REST protocol is also supported for custom automation, and it's fully documented in the manual. This means HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro is a fully self-contained broadcast server for ingest, media management, and play-out.
USB Webcam Output
For compatibility with a wide range of computer software, HyperDeck Shuttle features webcam support via the USB connection. If you're not recording to an external USB disk, you can plug the HyperDeck USB connection directly into a computer to get live video into any video software. The computer is tricked into thinking the HyperDeck is a common webcam, but it's really a broadcast-quality video source. This guarantees full compatibility with any video software and in full-resolution 1080 HD quality. HyperDeck Shuttle's USB webcam feature works with any video software, including Zoom and Microsoft Teams, or streams live with Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster, and more.
Advanced HDR Support
Work with the latest HDR workflows thanks to the HyperDeck Shuttle's HDR screen and wide color gamut. The built-in scopes automatically transition to HDR scopes when working with HDR formats. HDR sources input into the SDI and HDMI ports will automatically be detected. Static metadata PQ and HLG formats are handled according to the ST2084 standard. The bright LCD has a wider color gamut and can handle both Rec. 2020 and Rec. 709 color spaces. The built-in HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro LCD color gamut can even handle 100% of the DCI‑P3 format.
Built-In Teleprompter
With such a large search dial, HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro can be used as a teleprompter. Simply change to teleprompter in the record menu, and it will read standard RTF text files like scripts without the need for custom software. Scripts can be written using simple text editors such as TextEdit. You can move between multiple scripts with the previous and next clip buttons. If you press both the jog and scroll buttons, you can live scroll the script like a traditional teleprompter, as well as adjust the size and font displayed.
Supports Blackmagic Cloud
HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro supports adding a built-in M.2 flash memory storage card, transforming it into network storage. That means multiple users can access recordings over the local network, plus it can sync to Blackmagic Cloud. DaVinci Resolve will also sync the media so you can work with editors, colorists, VFX artists, and audio engineers anywhere in the world. HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro also records H.265 HD proxy files, which upload in seconds. The proxy even syncs during recording, so remote DaVinci Resolve editors get the media before the HyperDeck has stopped recording.
Direct Metadata Entry
The HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro model has an advanced digital slate and metadata features that make it extremely fast to add metadata to any shot. Simply swipe left or right from the edge of the screen to bring up the digital slate. You can even select take numbers to be automatically incremented when you start and stop recording, so you don't have to enter them manually for each shot. Set reel numbers to increment each time you format a card. All metadata is saved with the files and available in post-production with software such as DaVinci Resolve!. DaVinci Resolve can then source and organize all your shots based on metadata. Simply scroll and select the shots.
Powered by Blackmagic OS
The innovative Blackmagic OS has been designed for high-performance film and broadcast products, and it manages all functions on HyperDeck Shuttle. Only Blackmagic OS provides instant power-on while including powerful features such as video recording, timecode, audio, menu overlays, fast networking, multi-disk media management, and even localization. The menus are overlaid on the video output and include settings to customize your HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro, and the menus can be changed to display in either light or dark mode.
Compatible with Software and Streaming Sites
HyperDeck Shuttle 4K Pro records files compatible with virtually all post-production software. Plus, if you record in H.264, you can upload files from HyperDeck Shuttle directly to streaming services such as YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, and Twitter. You can use popular editing software such as DaVinci Resolve, Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, or Avid Media Composer because HyperDeck uses the same file formats used in post-production. Even VFX software such as Fusion and Adobe After Effects work with the files. Because HyperDeck records to disks formatted on computers, you can simply mount the disk on any computer and start editing without needing to copy files.

Does recording support 3440 x 1440 21:9 aspect ratio or does it put bars around and record at higher resolution? VRR?

I was able to confirm, for whatever reason, BMD Decklink capture cards do NOT support VESA, DCI ONLY. There is no VESA to DCI converter I’m aware so don’t go down the route of HMDI VESA to 12G - SDI because it will not work also. There are very few capture cards that support VESA, so back to my Elgato 4K60 Pro MK.2
