Zoom H5studio 4-Track Handy Recorder with 32-Bit Float Recording
The Zoom H5studio Handy Recorder is a 4-track portable recording solution designed for videographers and content creators who need high-quality audio capture on the go. Featuring 32-bit float recording and an X/Y stereo microphone array with large 19.4mm capsules, the H5studio delivers an extended frequency response for detailed, natural sound reproduction.
Outstanding Audio Capture with Large-Diaphragm Microphones
At the heart of the H5studio is Zoom's most powerful Handy Recorder yet, featuring a pair of oversized 19.4mm condenser microphones—the largest ever on a Zoom portable recorder. These capsules deliver a wider frequency response and greater sensitivity, offering unmatched detail and richness in every recording. With the ability to handle sound pressure levels up to 140 dB, the H5studio excels at capturing everything from quiet dialogue to loud live performances without distortion. The increased microphone surface area results in a more natural stereo image and enhanced spatial depth, giving your recordings a truly professional edge. Integrated RF shielding ensures that your recordings remain free from interference caused by smartphones, wireless routers, and other electronic devices.
Professional Preamps, 32-Bit Float Recording, and Gain Control
Equipped with Zoom's renowned F-series microphone preamps, the H5studio delivers ultralow noise performance with an equivalent input noise rating of -127 dBu EIN and an impressive 132 dB of dynamic range. These preamps, combined with dual analog-to-digital converters and 32-bit float recording, allow the H5studio to capture the full spectrum of sound without clipping or distortion—even during sudden volume spikes. Unlike traditional recorders that require constant gain adjustments, the H5studio offers a safety net through its 32-bit float architecture, preserving headroom and detail even in unpredictable conditions. Dedicated gain knobs let you fine-tune levels on the fly, saving time in postproduction.
Multitrack Recording and Versatile Input Options
The H5studio supports simultaneous recording of up to six tracks—four isolated mono tracks and a stereo mix—providing a powerful platform for complex productions such as podcast panel discussions, live performances, or sound-design sessions. Record at sample rates up to 192 kHz for high-resolution audio that meets the demands of professional post-production environments. The two locking XLR/TRS combo inputs support +48V phantom power and +4 dBu professional line-level signals, making them ideal for a wide range of microphones and instruments. A 3.5mm stereo mini jack with plug-in power offers additional flexibility for lavaliers, external mics, or wireless receivers. The H5studio also supports Zoom's next-generation Capsule System 3.0, which allows users to swap mic capsules to suit different recording scenarios. The system is fully compatible with 32-bit float capsule modules, offering future-ready expandability as new capsule options become available.
Production-Ready Tools for Seamless Workflow
The H5studio includes an array of built-in features that streamline production and post-processing. Mono mode offers a clean, focused recording path, for interviews, narration, and solo voice work. A low-cut filter helps remove low-frequency rumble from environmental noise, wind, or handling. Additional tools such as file normalization and export in both 16-bit and 24-bit WAV formats allow you to prep audio files quickly for editing or delivery. Variable speed playback from 0.5x to 2.0x and A-B repeat functions make it easy to review takes and mark key segments during playback. A recording start tone can be used to synchronize audio with DSLR or mirrorless camera footage, making the H5studio an excellent choice for video production teams.
USB Audio Interface and Integrated Monitoring
The H5studio also functions as a full-featured 4-in / 2-out USB audio interface, compatible with Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Record directly into your favorite DAW, livestreaming platform, or mobile app while simultaneously capturing a safety backup to microSD—terrific for both studio and field work. The 20mW headphone output delivers ample volume for real-time monitoring even in noisy environments, while the 3.5mm line-out jack allows direct connection to a camera or secondary recording device. A built-in speaker enables you to quickly spot check recordings without needing external gear, adding another layer of convenience to mobile workflows.
Expandable Wireless Capabilities and Timecode Sync
The H5studio is compatible with Zoom's optional WLM-1 dual-channel wireless microphone system, which includes two transmitters with integrated microphones capable of capturing clean, detailed audio up to 130 dB SPL. This makes it ideal for documentary interviews, event coverage, or spontaneous content creation. For productions that require precise audio/video sync, the optional TCA-1 timecode adapter allows you to generate or receive timecode with sub-frame accuracy. Thanks to its temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), the TCA-1 maintains drift within 0.5 frames over 24 hours. The H5studio supports wireless timecode sync with systems like ATOMOS UltraSync BLUE, making it a strong choice for multicamera setups and professional video shoots.
Remote Control and Multidevice Management
For remote operation, the H5studio integrates with the Zoom Handy Control and Sync app for iOS, allowing you to control recording functions, manage timecode, and sync multiple Zoom recorders from a single mobile device. With compatible accessories such as the BTA-1 or TCA-1 (both available separately), creators can streamline complex setups and maintain precise timing across multirecorder environments-ideal for collaborative projects or large-scale field shoots.
Accessibility and Multilingual Support
Accessibility is built into the core of the H5studio's design. An audible menu navigation system allows users who are blind or visually impaired to operate the recorder using either the built-in speaker or headphones. The interface supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese, ensuring a comfortable and intuitive experience for users around the world.
Sennheiser MKE 600 Shotgun Microphone

Upgrade the audio quality in your video productions by switching from the built-in mic on your camera to the Sennheiser MKE 600 battery- or phantom-powered shotgun microphone. Its focused directional characteristics and resistance to structure-borne noise offer sonic results well suited to a variety of production scenarios from independent films and web series to nature shows and documentaries.

The MKE 600's high sensitivity and low-noise circuitry unlock improved sound quality without extreme gain on noisy camera preamps. With a natural roll-off at 40 Hz and a selectable low-cut filter at 100 Hz, the MKE 600 can deliver clear intelligibility while attenuating low-frequency noise such as rumble. Plus, its frequency response incorporates a gentle rise in treble to enhance speech clarity.

The lightweight and durable metal housing ensures reliable toughness without weighing down your rig. The included shoe shockmount accommodates mounting the MKE 600 to a camera or tripod. Connect the mic's XLR output to an XLR-equipped mic preamp or use the supplied adapter cable to plug it into the 3.5mm mic input on a camera.

Quality Sound
The 10" long MKE 600 uses an interference tube and a supercardioid/lobar polar pattern to provide pronounced directivity on-axis along with significant attenuation of sound entering at the sides and rear, making the MKE 600 far more effective at capturing distant sources than the omnidirectional mics found in most cameras.
Bass Roll-Off
The MKE 600 naturally reduces sub-bass frequencies below 40 Hz to prevent unnatural bass buildup. Activate the switchable low-cut filter at 100 Hz to roll off more low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic.
Battery or Phantom Powered
Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 48 VDC phantom powering, the MKE 600 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters, as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.

When using devices that don't offer phantom power, the MKE 600 may optionally be powered for up to 150 hours by a single AA battery (available separately). Approximately 8 hours of operating time remain once the low-battery indicator lights up red. Use the on/off switch to prevent unnecessary battery drain.

Ideal for Camera, Tripod, or Boompole Mounting
The MKE 600 includes a shoe shockmount for easy placement on your camera or a tripod. To mount the MKE 600 on a boompole or mic stand, use the Rycote InVision INV-HG mkIII shockmount (available separately), which will also impede the transfer of vibrations between your boompole/stand and the mic.
XLR to 3.5mm TRS Adapter Cable for Cameras
Included with a MKE 600 is a short coiled adapter cable—XLR female to 3.5mm TRS male—that lets you connect the mic directly into a mini-jack mic input on a camera.
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The MKE 600 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners by up to 25 dB. Enhanced attenuation of wind noise is possible with the addition of an optional windshield such as the Rycote 15cm Super-Softie, which also provides high immunity to rain.

For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider a complete windjammer, windshield, and shockmount suspension system such as the Rycote Super-Blimp NTG or the large Rycote Super-Shield Kit (both available separately).

Auray BP-59A Aluminum Boompole with Internal Coiled Cable and Side Exit (9.6')
The Auray BP-59A is a 5-section aluminum boompole that combines an anti-twist tube design with ergonomic twist locks to offer smooth telescoping and hassle-free, one-handed operation—great for adjusting the length quickly, on the fly when filming documentary, ENG, or reality-style videos. The boompole has a collapsed length of 2.8', an extended length of 9.6', and weighs only 2.2 lb. The sections are made of lightweight aluminum tubes designed for portability and durability.

An internal, coiled cable with a side-exit XLR connector makes it easy to extend or retract the boompole while streamlining your setup with fewer cables to carry. The custom, removable head tip and drop-through design allow for cable reconfiguration without any soldering required. High-quality Rean and Neutrik connectors are used for reliable signal transfer and uncompromised performance, even in challenging environments.

Durable Aluminum Construction

  • The durable anodized aluminum construction can handle the bumps and impacts of demanding travel and location shoots in all kinds of weather.

Solid Grip and Smooth Telescoping

  • The ergonomic twist locks are covered with rubber grips that are easy on your hands and comfortable to operate, making length adjustment smooth and effortless. Improved shims ensure a firm and secure hold until you loosen the locks.

Anti-Twist Alignment Tubing for One-Handed Operation

  • Quick length adjustment when you're recording on the go is crucial for keeping from interrupting the shoot. With an anti-twist design, adjacent tubes won't twist when you're expanding or retracting the boompole. This allows for one-handed twist lock operation and makes setup and length adjustment fast and easy.

Internal, Coiled Cable with Strain Relief

  • The integrated, coiled XLR cable is engineered to minimize unwanted radio frequency (RF) and electromagnetic (EM) interference that can degrade the audio signal. The coiled design allows the cable to smoothly extend and retract with the telescoping tubes.
  • The tip's strain-relief system absorbs tension, secures the cable, and protects the cable from damage at the edges of the tip exit. Additional strain relief at the bottom of the pole protects and preserves the connections between the cable and the TA3 connector.

Side-Exit Connector

  • The side-exit XLR connector allows the operator to rest the pole on its end without damaging the wiring or connector. To protect the pole, a rubber end cap provides a durable rubber pad at the bottom end.
Removable Arrowhead Tip for Solderless Cable Replacement

  • BP Series boompoles feature a removable Arrowhead tip designed to reduce weight at the top of the pole.
  • The tip also allows easy drop-through cable insertion for quick and uncomplicated cable replacement.
  • Thanks to the solderless design, you won't need special tools to replace the XLR cable using the cable replacement kit (available separately).
High-Quality XLR Connectors

  • The internal cable is equipped with high-quality XLR and TA3 (mini XLR) connectors manufactured by Rean. The connectors ensure flawless signal transfer and secure locking connections, preventing the cable from disconnecting, even if there's stress or an accidental tug on the cable.
  • The Neutrik bottom-exit connector is housed in its own casing and ensures a secure connection to the boompole that won't jeopardize signal flow by twisting or jiggling.

Standard 3/8"-16 Threaded Mount

  • The boompole is outfitted with a standard 3/8"-16 threaded mount to ensure compatibility with most professional shotgun mics and shockmounts.

Zoom H5studio Reviews

Great recorder with one big flaw

By Jacob
Rated 4 out of 5
Date: 2026-06-02

Let’s start with the good: this recorder records great sound on the included mics and the shotgun mic attachment I got for it. The big issue I have is amount of handheld noise it picks up. The body is plastic, and there’s not enough sound dampening built into this recorder to stop it from picking up the sound of the recorder itself being picked up. Idk, seems strange when it’s marketed as a “handy recorder” and they try to show it being used for hand-held recording as part of a camera rig.

An improvement over the old H5

By Thomas
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2025-06-09

Pros: The preamp is much quieter than the old H5 32-bit float is useful. The shock mounts on the XY capsule seem better. Independently controlling the levels of each XY capsule is a neat touch. I like the redesigned XLR plug. There is some convex space around the plug which is helpful because some of my XLR adapters have clips that take up space. The scroll wheel and enter button combination is much easier to use than the H5 rocker. Using the rocker to mark an audio track was picky. Cons: The tripod mount is located kind of far up, so it doesn't balance near the center of gravity. Make sure you have a sturdy tripod or attachment. My battery case panel is a little wiggly. It's not going to fall out, but any wiggling in an audio device is so etching to watch. It only lets you supply 48 volt phantom power or not at all. There are adapters for that, but other devices let you pick 24 or 12 within the device. This might help save battery which is especially important for a handy recorder. It no longer has compressors. It has a limiter you can apply to individual tracks or to the stereo mix or to the output audio or all of the above, which is helpful, but I would also like the option to use compressors like the old H5. Neither pro nor con: The new XY capsule sounds darker than the old capsule, less high frequency. Marking the audio requires that the mark option is selected in the middle of the recording, but there are other options, so it's possible to accidentally scroll away from the marker unless you double check during the recording. It's nice to have more options to choose from, but it comes at the cost of accidentally picking the wrong function. I'm not an audio professional, but I record instructional videos for my students. I've been using the zoom h1n for about 5 years, and for about 1 year I was using the old version of the H5. The H5 Studio is a bit pricier, but I like the new features. I'm not a professional, but for what it's worth, I am satisfied.
