I own the hd3 and the a5+ and love them both. These are no different. These are very Solid speakers, great build, nice warm tone. Would go great with the s8 sub.

Yes, only one of the speakers is powered and connects to AC power. The second speaker connects to the powered speaker via standard speaker cable (2m/6.5' cable included).
