Rokinon AF 14-24mm f/2.8 Reviews

Very Good Lens

I bought this lens hoping it could replace my Sigma 14-24mm Art lens mainly used for landscape Milky Way photography. I was able to do a comparison this weekend and am very happy with the results. Landscape pics were sharp center to edge at different focal lengths, wide open and stopped down to f8. Star images were surprisingly comparable. Coma was more evident on the Sigma wide open than the Rokinon in the corners. Flare, however, is much worse on the Rokinon but can be controlled if you shoot on a tripod and cover the sun with your finger to take a second photo and blend them in PS. You’d have to do that anyway on the Sigma but that lens shows simpler flare patterns. Vignetting is pretty bad on the Rokinon but is taken care of nicely in LR if you download the lens profile from the Samyang website. At almost half the weight and substantially lighter, I will be selling my Sigma and lightening up my camera bag.

seriously flawed lens

It's an interesting lens, but with serious problems. At 24mm end the lens is just average, but there are no serious flaws. At 14mm the center part of the image is excellent, great resolution, great contrast, great colors. There are huge distortions and vignetting at 14mm, so applying correction profile is a must. I used Lightroom profile from Samyang site. The edges at 14mm are very poor, even at f/8. My lens is also decentered with the left side noticeably worse than the right side. But both sides are bad, and the profile correction stretching the image makes the edges look even worse. The color at 14mm is very uneven across the frame, warmer at the center and cooler at the edges. Due to all these flaws this lens is absolutely unacceptable for landscapes. At closer distances the edges look better and the flaws are not noticeable. It's possible I've got a bad copy, I had bad experience with other Rokinon lenses before.
