Zhiyun Molus X100 RGB Reviews
Cool with a major flaw
The light is very bright for its form factor, however the battery life with the included battery is horrendous. Maybe 20-30 minute life span, and it takes hours to recharge. And if you want to buy extras, they don't come cheap. Zhiyun needs to figure out their power situation before charging nearly $400. The value just isn't there if you can only be go portable for a couple of shots.
Powerful, versatile compact COB with a few forgivable flaws
TLDR: I greatly enjoyed using this light on a few shoots lately, including a 6 day feature film shoot. I got to put it through its paces and get a good sense of where it comes in handy. It's a great supplement to a kit, or great as an only light if you have to travel super minimal. PROS: Nice build quality, handy battery pack, useful accessories that are made well and work. The Fresnel is nice and spotty, the softbox and barn doors are helpful. Ability to do RGB, or really wide CRT range is helpful. It's exceedingly bright for its size. For comparison, I've been using the Amaran p60c as my compact travel light, and that is a much bulkier, less bright panel light with its own quirks. For travel, this thing is a winner. The knobs and buttons are nice and clicky, responsive, with each click going up or down in 1 percent increments. The ability to power through the included power supply, DC barrel, or USB-C power delivery is awesome. This thing is basically silent even with the fan running. I never noticed it once. A cool side bonus is you can use the battery grip as a power bank. CONS: The lighting effects, as expected for this level of light, are not very good. Sometimes they can work, but I wouldn't call them subtle. The light suffers from the same problem with many LEDs, which is that when you want a really dim fill light or eyelight, 1% is still much too bright. 1% to 0 is a big difference. Sadly, since the USB-C port is on the inside where the battery grip attaches to the light, you can't charge the battery and use the light simultaneously. However, you can power the light separately and take the battery grip to charge elsewhere because the plugs are on the body of the light. My biggest gripes with this light are that the DC port and the USB-c would frequently get yanked out due to the weight of the power supply or cables. Then, even if the battery grip is attached, if you're running on AC power it doesn't switch to the battery - the light simply powers off. If the DC port and USB-C were locking (the latter could use the screw + usb-c design that Blackmagic implemented on their new Pyxis monitors), that would be an easy change and huge quality of life improvement. The last con is that there is no attachment for light stands included, something that is included with most Amaran products to allow you to rotate and tilt your light. So you'll have to buy your own. Not the end of the world but for $500 for the full kit, they could probably include it and that would add a lot of value out of the box. Overall, really loving this light as a fill light, eyelight, and even a keylight in dark situations, such as moonlight interior, inside of a car, hairlight, etc.
