OM SYSTEM OM-5 II Overview

Compact, Lightweight, Adventure-Ready
Returning to the light footprint and high-res imaging standards OM System is known for, the second-generation OM-5 Mark II Mirrorless Camera boasts improvements in comfort and convenience to reassert itself at the apex of adventure-friendly cameras.
What's New in the Mark II
USB-C Charging
The OM-5 Mark II has a USB-C port allowing both power delivery and high-speed transfer of photos and video. The new port also makes it possible to use portable power banks, available separately, to charge the camera on the go for all-day shooting in any environment.
Computational Photography Button
The computational photography button, located on the camera's top plate next to the shutter release button, gives the user direct access to a wide array of creative tools, such as High-Res Shot, Live ND, Focus Stacking, HDR, and Multiple Exposure modes without having to enter the menu.
New Shooting Modes
Two new creative shooting modes were designed specifically to aid low-light shooters:
  • Night Vision mode brings out the details of a scene shrouded in darkness, clearly displaying both the night sky and the foreground and simplifying composition.
  • Hand Held Assist allows users to gauge the stability of handheld long exposures in real time.
New Color Profiles
The OM-5 features two new video color profiles, the OM Cinema 1 & 2, meant to help the user achieve a cinematic look to video footage without requiring special processing or grading.
OM SYSTEM Menu
Introduced in the OM-1 Mark II and the OM-3, the OM-5 Mark II now carries the company's newest menu system, a much-lauded and intuitive organization of features and settings that's easy to understand, even for first-time users.
Improved Grip
The OM-5 Mark II features a more pronounced handgrip, giving users a superior hold benefitting one-handed use.
Imaging Details & Body Design
20.4MP Live MOS Sensor and TruePic IX Image Processor
The original's 20.4MP Live MOS sensor and TruePic IX image processor return, working together to provide fast shooting performance, a sensitivity range up to ISO 25600, 4K video recording capabilities, and a continuous shooting rate of up 30 fps when shooting in the camera's Pro Capture mode, which enables users to half-press the shutter button to begin capturing fast-moving subjects before normal shooting begins.
121-Point All Cross-Type Phase-Detection AF
An advanced autofocus system combines both 121 phase-detection AF points and 121 contrast-detection AF points for focusing performance that is both quick and accurate.
  • All 121 phase-detection points are cross-type for improved precision in mixed lighting conditions, providing enhanced subject tracking capabilities.
  • Different focusing modes are available to suit working in various shooting conditions as well, including Group Target 25-point mode for moving subjects such as birds and wildlife.
  • Face and Eye subject detection modes are available, as well as Starry Sky AF mode as well as individual AF area settings for vertical and horizontal positions.
5-Axis Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
In-body, sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 6.5 stops with any lens in use and compensates for camera movements that become especially noticeable when working with telephoto shots, macro imagery, and long exposures.
  • The image stabilization system works across five axes to compensate for vertical angle rotation, horizontal angle rotation, horizontal shift, vertical shift, and rolling camera shake movement.
  • When paired with select lenses featuring optical image stabilization, shake compensation up to 7.5 stops is possible.
  • The system benefits use with the High-Res Shot and Hand Held Assist shooting modes, allowing you to capture sharp images with incredible detail, even in low light.
DCI and UHD 4K Video Recording and OM-Log400
The sensor and processor also support recording both DCI (4096 x 2160) and UHD (3840 x 2160) 4K movies.
  • When working in DCI, a true 24p frame rate is used, while UHD 4K is available in frame rates up to 30p.
  • Audio recording is possible using the built-in stereo microphone, and an external mic jack is available for improved audio recording quality.
  • Limitless video recording is possible, within the constraints of storage and battery.
  • Time-lapse Movie mode is also available for recording up to 4K UHD resolution.
  • The camera can be used as a UVC/UAC web camera when connected to a compatible device via USB-C cable.
  • The rear LCD shows a red Recording rectangle when live capturing footage, and a red indicator lamp on the front of the camera lights up during recording as well.
Creative Shooting Modes
In addition to Night Mode and Hand Held Assist, the OM-5 Mark II carries a variety of creative shooting modes:
  • Simulating the effects of a neutral density filter, Live ND 16 mode results in blurred subject movement by combining exposures into a single image to replicate a photo taken at slower shutter speeds. This is particularly suitable for photographing moving water and clouds.
  • Focus stacking mode records multiple sequential frames then composites the exposures into a single image that exhibits an extended depth of field.
  • High-Res Shot mode offers the equivalent output of a 50MP image in handheld mode, and an 80MP image using a tripod.
  • Live Composite mode gradually builds up an exposure over time without overexposing key elements within the frame and is ideal for long exposures, nighttime shooting, and light painting applications.
  • Vertical Video mode provides a 9:16 aspect ratio for easily integrating videos on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other similar platforms.
Designed for the Elements
IP53-rated, the OM-5 Mark II offers superior weather protection and withstands some of the harshest conditions in the field. Its tough construction renders the camera freezeproof, dust and splash-resistant, and operable at temperatures as low as 14°F.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder for eye-level monitoring and clear, distortion-free viewing.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor features a vari-angle design to support working from a variety of angles, and it is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation and image playback.
  • Included BLS-50 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 310 shots per charge.
  • Single SD memory card slot is UHS-II compatible for fast read/write speeds.
  • Wide accessory compatibility provided with the incorporation of a microphone port, a top hot shoe, USB-C and micro-HDMI ports, and a 2.5mm port for optional remotes.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth permits wireless image sharing and remote camera control from a linked smartphone or tablet.

OM SYSTEM OM-5 II Reviews

M43 For the Win

By Tom
Rated 5 out of 5

After sampling nearly all of the digital camera systems from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic and Olympus over the past 25 years I have come to the conclusion that the OM-5 Mark II is the perfect camera for my needs. I like to shoot landscapes, still life, macro, and family events. The OM-5 and a couple of prime lenses makes for a very small and light kit, has great computational features, is built like a tank, weatherproof, and is just simply fun to use. I recently had a portfolio of my images published in a major photo magazine, but since I did not have my bulky full-frame camera and huge expensive lenses with me, I shot the entire set with my iPhone 13. This was the tipping point in my realizing the best camera truly is the one you have with you when inspiration strikes. I still prefer using a real camera over a phone, so I did not hesitate to sell my full frame system and right size to the OM-5 Mark II. Do it - it's all you need!

Your specs say "Magnesium Alloy" body, so is it now safe to use a PD Capture Clip without the tripod mount ripping out?
Asked by: John
I wouldn’t do so and I don’t know why BHPhoto is saying this camera it’s a magnesium alloy body build - it’s not. Already dpreview asked if they changed the design of the tripod socket from OM-5 and OM System told them no, it’s the same design of OM-5. Look at the specs of the weight of the OM-5 without battery: 366 grams vs 370 grams. Magnesium alloy would have pushed that number higher.
