Will this card allow for longer burst duration ...

Will this card allow for longer burst duration when shoot 120 frames per second raw images on the Sony a9 iii? If so, how long?
Asked by: Ben
The Sony 960GB CFexpress 4.0 Type A TOUGH Memory Card (B&H# SOCEAG960T) is very fast. However, using it as opposed to the more common, long-time available, less capacious, but otherwise similar Sony CFexpress Type A memory cards with PCIe 3.0 interfaces will not allow for a greater number of exposures to be taken before the buffer fills when shooting in bursts with the Sony a9 III Mirrorless Camera (B&H# SOA93). This is because the camera itself uses a PCIe 3.0 bus to interface with in its memory card slots. As such, any CFexpress Type A memory card (including those with a PCIe 4.0 interface such as this 960GB one) inserted in that camera will be forced to revert to using PCIe 3.0's narrower bandwidth. Having said that, not only would we expect that speed to be equal to that of the aforementioned earlier cards, but any future cameras and even currently existing card readers utilizing the PCIe 4.0 bus will allow for much faster reading and writing to this memory card relative to those preceding it.

If I use this card on the Sony a7 IV, can I shoot raw uncompressed at max speed without ever hitting the buffer? Thanks!
Asked by: Gustavo
Regarding if you use the Sony 240GB CFexpress 4.0 Type A TOUGH Memory Card on the Sony a7 IV and whether you can shoot raw uncompressed at the max speed without ever hitting the buffer, you may still reach the buffer if you continue shooting in high-speed continuous mode with minimal pauses. However, the buffer clears rapidly, so you are unlikely to experience any noticeable slowdowns or performance issues.
