Atomos Ninja TX Overview

Totally reengineered, packed with features, and still aligned with the classic Ninja monitor line, the Atomos Ninja TX 5.2" HDMI/12G-SDI Wi-Fi-Enabled Camera Monitor/Recorder from Atomos is a 5" on-camera monitor and recorder ideal for use on any set. New features include both 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 input/output, camera control, touch to focus, integrated Connect technology providing Wi-Fi connectivity for TX/RX streaming and direct upload, a brighter 1500 cd/m² touchscreen display, 8K30 raw recording, recording to CFexpress Type B or USB-C, RF/Bluetooth timecode sync, a built-in NDI/HX3 license, and all codecs such as ProRes RAW/DNx/H.265 are now built in.
5.2" Touchscreen Display
The 5.2" IPS touchscreen of the Ninja TX offers a 1920 x 1080 resolution with a brighter 1500 cd/m² display for rich, accurate color precision, even in broad daylight. The 8/10-bit color processing, HDR support, Rec. 709 color gamut, and Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro/Plus calibration support ensure color-accurate, high-quality monitoring of your footage.
Updated Linux Operating System
Redesigned for the new Ninja TX, the AtomOS Linux operating system provides updated tools, a sleeker design, and more efficient, cooler operation.
Wireless Features
With AtomX Connect features now built into the monitor, the Ninja TX now has expanded connectivity features.

With its built-in license, the Ninja TX can be fully integrated into an NDI environment, either as an NDI source, visible to all other authorized devices on the network, or as an NDI receiver, providing high-quality, low-bandwidth video. It also includes AirGlu timecode sync over RF or Bluetooth to sync all your cameras, audio recorders, and monitors, acting as a powerful timecode hub.

Camera to Cloud
The new Camera to Cloud (C2C) workflow allows you to upload your video files directly from your Atomos monitor-recorder to the cloud. Atomos supports direct progressive upload to their own cloud platform, ATOMOSphere, as well as Adobe Frame.io and Dropbox. Unlike its predecessors, the Ninja TX has everything you need for C2C built in.
Comprehensive Color and Metadata
The Ninja TX supports the use of select Sony, ARRI, JVC, RED, FUJIFILM, Nikon, Panasonic, and Canon log formats. Upload custom 3D LUTs to the monitor and output HDR conversion to Log, HLG, PQ, or Dolby Vision formats.

Via the HDMI input, you can record raw metadata such as white balance, exposure index, shutter speed/angle, Iris F stop, ISO, gamma, and gamut.

12G-SDI and HDMI Input/Output
HDMI input supports 8K video up to 30 fps, up to 4K60, and up to 1080p120. Loop-through passes the incoming HDMI signal from the camera to another device, for example, an external monitor, wireless transmitter, or live streaming encoder.

The addition of 12G-SDI means a wider range of cameras and production workflows is supported, and the SDI ports also support loop-through. The monitor also supports cross conversion from HDMI to 12G-SDI and 12G-SDI to HDMI.

Recording/USB Features
The Ninja TX features a CFexpress Type B slot and dual USB-C recording outputs supporting ultrafast data transfer rates based on PCIe and NVMe protocols, designed for scalability and futureproofing. In addition to recording directly to storage, the USB-C ports can also be used for calibration, custom 3D LUT uploads, adding audio devices, and firmware updates.

As of the AtomOS 12.2.1 free, over-the-air/download update, the Ninja TX can now record ProRes RAW from the Canon EOS R6 Mark III camera. RAW recording on the Canon EOS R6 Mark III supports up to 6960 x 3672p30 and 4320 x 2278p60.

Power Options
An L-series battery plate on the back of the Ninja TX can support NP-F L-series batteries. An optional battery eliminator can be used to provide DC power to the monitor.

A USB-C port supports 30W PD power delivery with the included cable.

Comprehensive Monitoring Tools
The Ninja TX offers a comprehensive suite of simple, one-touch monitoring tools for focus, framing, and exposure, including focus peaking, zoom (2:1, 1:1), zebras, false color (including ARRI and EL Zone), frame guides, SMPTE safe areas, grid markers, waveforms, RGB parade, vectorscope, and flexible 3D/1D LUT support with profile and preset options (including .cube file uploads). It also provides anamorphic de-squeeze monitoring to correct the ratio for anamorphic lens setups.
Control Options
  • Multifunction control buttons work in tandem with the touchscreen interface for intuitive onboard control
  • Auto HDMI camera trigger is supported by Canon and Sony cameras using the Atomos Open Standard
  • SDI triggers are available with supported cameras
  • Bluetooth and RF-driven remote control via AirGlu
  • LANC control and calibration can be accessed using a separately available USB-C to serial connection cable
  • Camera control will be available on the monitor with the latest OTA firmware update

Atomos Ninja TX Reviews

Unreliable for C2C

I had super high hopes for this product (a "C2C" solution so that my client could film himself and walk away on a regular basis), but it's proven to be unreliable. When it works, IT WORKS–seamless integration with Frame.io (and many other services I'm sure). But when it doesn't work, the connection needs to be painstakingly reestablished manually, and my client is remote from me, making for a painful FaceTime experience getting it back up and running. There doesn't seem to be a discernible rhyme or reason to the disconnections. A handful of times, we even had the monitor explicably stop recording after some time, mid-recording (to a T7 over the included USB-C cable), which makes it a non-starter in our current situation. Admittedly, it can probably be perfected with firmware updates—and it's otherwise an impressive machine—but since this is probably one of the primary use cases for it over another Ninja-series monitor (sans C2C), it now just sits as a really expensive confidence monitor on my client's setup, and we'll be looking for a different C2C solution. I would happily begin using it again and rewrite/re-rate this review if a rock solid firmware update came out that would all but promise foolproof recordings and uploads. In the meantime, I won't be purchasing any more of these for my other clients with similar setups.

Fantastic piece of kit!

This is the best solution yet for my workflow. I used the previous Ninjas with different media storage, which made things clunky. CFX-B cards are really a perfect solution for streamlining workflow. This coming from a Venice user who has to shoot into old AXS media for raw workflow, and SxS for internal. Taking that same 6K oversampled footage out of SDI or HDMI into the Ninja TX still gives me a beautiful image and an efficient recording format for post! Highly recommend due to the rear ports and external power solutions to keep things compact. I also use the NDI feature more than I thought I would!

How does the time code work? Can it sync 4 cameras? Do cameras need a cable, device or receive via wifi bluetooth?
Asked by: s
It's like having an UltraSync Blue inside. Some cameras (Nikon, Panasonic, Fuji) have Airglu built-in and can sync over Bluetooth. Other cameras would have to be connected via an UltraSync One into the timecode port or mic port for LTC (and converted to proper timecode in your NLE).

Regardless of how you transmit, be it the Shogun Ultra or the Atomos Ninja TX 5.2" HDMI/12G-SDI Wi-Fi-Enabled Camera Monitor/Recorder, NDI latency is due to the quality of your infrastructure supporting it.
