AEA Ribbon Mics 4038M Overview

Originally developed by the BBC in the 1950s, the AEA Coles 4038 remains one of the most respected studio ribbon microphones ever built. Still manufactured in England to its original specifications, the 4038 delivers the smooth, natural tone and detailed transient response that made it a broadcast and recording standard for over 70 years.

Classic Ribbon Sound, Modern Reliability
The 4038 captures sound with the warmth, depth, and realism that only a true ribbon microphone can provide. Its bidirectional (figure-8) pickup pattern produces balanced front-and-rear capture, excellent rejection from the sides, and a natural sense of space. With a frequency response extending from 30 Hz to 15 kHz, the 4038 delivers a smooth, controlled high end and rich proximity effect for vocals, brass, strings, and drums.
Built for Studio Versatility
From vintage-style drum overheads and horn sections to guitar amps and orchestral instruments, the 4038 excels wherever musical detail and tonal accuracy matter most. Its lightweight aluminum ribbon, shielded toroidal transformer, and precision acoustic housing provide low noise, exceptional transient response, and long-term durability. The mic requires no powering and the delicate ribbon element can be damaged by phantom power and loud sources; please exercise caution during setup.
Professional Construction with Accessories
Each 4038 features the original BBC-designed body and Western Electric 4069 connector; a 4069 XLR adapter is supplied. An AEA 4038SA stand adapter, hard case, and blue velvet bag are supplied.
