Blackmagic Design Prodock Reviews

Good dock, bad USBC connector

The product itself is great and works wonderfully with the Blackmagic camera app. But the USBC connector that goes to the iPhone was not well thought out. It is both L shaped and very thick plastic around the metal connector. This product is intended to be used with iPhones in cages, which have what? Yeah, metal cages around the USBC connector on the iPhone. Needless to say it could not work with the iPhone cage I have from SmallRig and required me to buy a 80Gbps extension cable that wasn’t an oversized L-shaped connector. Hopefully they rethink the connector on the next version.

Game changer for iPhone Video

I ordered my Blackmagic Design Pro Dock for my iPhone 17 Pro Max as soon as I could. The time sync works perfectly with my Tascam FR AV2 (which I couple using Atmos Bluetooth to a Ninja TX on Canon C500). I am able to record 4K ProRes raw video on a Crucial SSD. My only complaint so far is there only one ARRI style 1/4” 20 thread mounting point on the top and bottom on the device (would loved to have seen a Arca style grip built into the top or bottom). You also need to use the Blackmagic iPhone camera app (I love the Leica iPhone app). I’m waiting for the a Beastcage iPhone 17 Pro Max cage to build out my full rig. Honestly the iPhone 17 Pro Max video is so good it may give FX3 shooter’s something new to add more camera angles to their raw video shoots. The iPhone dynamic range is incredible (very low light sunset video).
