It just works. Plug one end into the computer Display Port and the other end into the VGA cable on the monitor side then start the computer. No drivers to load, no adjustments to make! Happy day!
Good quality

Many of our company users, in the call centers, run dual monitors. I've tried the monoprice brand and it fails after a short amount of time. Since switching to Startech I have not heard any complaints. I buy a lot of Startech adapters and will as long as the quality stays the same. This website always beats everyone else's price as well.

question
Is it an active adapter?
It has to be active, since it must convert digital data to analog signals. I believe it gets its power from the HDMI connection.
