Panasonic DMW-DMS1 Overview

The Panasonic LUMIX DMW-DMS1 Digital Multi-Pattern Shotgun Microphone delivers crisp, focused audio in a lightweight, cable-free design built for modern creators. Featuring a newly engineered 0.4-inch large-diameter microphone array, six selectable directional modes, advanced wind-noise cancellation, and professional 32-bit float recording, it provides flexible, distortion-free sound capture in environments ranging from quiet studios to high-intensity live events.
High-Precision 0.4" Large-Diameter Mic Array
The new 0.4" large-diameter mic array delivers crisp, focused audio, even in noisy environments, so creators can capture clear, professional sound on the go.
Floating Shockmount Design
By adopting an internal shockmount mechanism with a floating structure, the system significantly reduces vibration noise during handheld or walking shots—helping maintain clean recordings while on the move.
Advanced Wind-Noise Cancellation
The included windscreen ensures clear audio recording outdoors, reducing wind noise while maintaining excellent sound quality. The DMW-DMS1 goes further with a new wind-noise cancellation approach: rather than compressing the entire audio signal before removing wind noise—which also compresses the target sound—the dynamic range is expanded using float recording technology before wind noise is removed, so the target sound is not compressed. The result is open, natural vocals, even in harsh weather.
Six Directional Modes
Switch pickup patterns to match interviews, vlogs, music, travel, and more—no extra gear or complex setups required. Each mode is purpose-built for specific scenarios:

  • Forward directionality cardioid: captures sound naturally while retaining some ambient sound. Recommended for recording multiple-person conversations and capturing ambient sounds.
  • Stereo (90°): emphasizes the forward direction for recordings with a sense of presence. Recommended for live street performances, studio recordings, and similar scenarios.
  • Wide stereo (120°): emphasizes the feeling of open space for recordings with a sense of presence. Recommended for public presentations, sports events, wide ambient environments.
  • Forward directionality supercardioid: clearly captures front sounds while suppressing sounds from the sides and rear. Recommended for noisy environments or indoor spaces with reverberation.
  • Rearward directionality supercardioid: clearly captures rear sounds while suppressing sounds from the sides and front. Recommended for recording with narration from the camera operator.
  • Bidirectional supercardioid: clearly captures front and rear sounds while suppressing sounds from the sides. Recommended for interview recording when there is interaction between the videographer and the subject.
32-Bit Float Recording
Record in 32-bit float for distortion-free audio, even at extreme levels up to 120 dB—perfect for concerts, events, and high-intensity environments. The microphone supports both linear PCM and floating formats across multiple sample rates and channel configurations, including 48 and 96 kHz options and 4-channel recording.
Built-In Backup Recording Modes
Two backup recording modes protect your takes from accidental setting errors and let you capture ambient sound when you need it. Mode 1 records an all-directions signal on CH3 and a -20 dB version on CH4. Mode 2 mirrors CH1 on CH3 and CH2 on CH4, both at -20 dB. Compatible with S1RII, S1II, and S1IIE as of February 2026.
Lightweight, Cable-Free Operation
At just 0.22 lb, the DMW-DMS1 draws power and transfers digital audio through the hot shoe—no cables needed. This keeps your rig clean and minimizes setup time in the field.
Intuitive Physical Controls
Physical switches are intuitive, with adjustable-brightness buttons for low-light shoots. Dedicated switches for Wind Cut, Noise Cut, Gain, and directional mode selection allow quick, reliable adjustments without diving into menus.
Windscreen and Storage Pouch Included
The included pouch is designed to fit the microphone, even with the windscreen attached, making it convenient to carry around.

Panasonic DMW-DMS1 Reviews

SPECTACULAR mic!

Using on my S1R-II. This mic is extremely clean. It's two front focus modes work shockingly well. It can deliver very tight and narrow pattern directly in front of you and you have the ability to widen it if you want. The ultra wide stereo pattern is another that works incredibly well with left/right separation being just soooo sweet. You can dial in a VERY wide stereo field at it's widest mode. I was recording rain in my backyard yesterday and listening with headphones was stunning. The pre-amps on this mic are very, VERY clean too. My only complaint = As of March 31 2026, several software packages that normally accept 32bit float audio with no trouble cannot read these audio files. Vegas Pro and Handbrake and a couple of others will NOT play these files. Seems to be mis-placed metadata inside the files??? I suspect this is a temporary file packaging bug that will be fixed quickly by Lumix or other software companies. I don't know where the problem lies. Adobe Premiere works fine with it. Anyway, I took one star off for that problem alone. Otherwise, this mic is absolutely EXCELLENT in every way. I will buy another when they get it working on my GH7.

Can you put timecode on the mini plug while sing the hot shoe mic?
Asked by: NW Audio Group
The microphone input connector on Panasonic cameras is disabled when the Panasonic DMW-DMS1 Digital Multi-Pattern Shotgun Microphone is connected through the hot shoe. In consequence, it is not possible to send timecode to the camera at the same time.
