Pultec EQM-1A3-SS Overview

The Pultec EQM-1A3-SS is a 2-band mastering EQ sporting fully solid-state design with an API 2520 op-amp for the gain stage. Armed with progressive-taper 21-step switches for mastering precision, the 2 RU EQM-1A3-SS enables 20 to 100 Hz shelf boosting or attenuation, 3 to 16 kHz peak boosting, and 5 to 20 kHz shelf attenuation.

Further controls include switches for EQ In and on/off for the entire unit. You can also adjust the Q (bandwidth) between sharp and broad for precise sonic sculpting. The amplifier delivers a flat 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response. I/O is via 3-pin XLR. Each EQM-1A3-SS is made in the USA.

Solid-State Line Amp
This solid-state line amp version of the EQM-1A3 has exactly the same front end (input transformer and passive EQ section) but utilizes a solid-state op-amp (API 2520) gain stage driving a Triad output transformer, just like the originals.
Progressive-Taper Switches
The EQM-1A3-SS (mastering version) takes the EQP-1 / EQP-1A evolution a significant step farther by replacing the potentiometers with 21-position ELMA switches, loaded with precision metal film resistors to achieve custom tapers for each control. The current design implements Pultec's full-range, progressive-taper design, which provides 0.5 dB per-step precision for the first 50% of rotation and then progressively larger (1 or 2 dB) steps as the control is rotated from 50 to 100% of rotation.

This allows for precise control for subtle equalization on a mix bus or for similar applications. Furthermore, the stepped controls make recall a breeze, and the precise tracking between units is essential for stereo image retention when using a pair on the stereo mix bus.
