Featuring refinements based on inciteful suggestions from legendary producer Jack Douglas, the Pultec MEQ-500 is a 500-series passive EQ module offering exacting midrange EQ control of the audio power region. With three independent sets of controls that allow you to simultaneously boost on peak curves and dip, this EQ is ideal for horns, strings, snares, guitars, vocals, and more.
The MEQ-500 offers low-mid peak boost from 200 Hz to 1.5 kHz (0 to 10 dB), high-mid peak boost from 1.2 to 8 kHz (0 to 8 dB), and dip attenuation from 200 Hz to 7 kHz. You can use all three bands simultaneously for complex and precise sonic sculpting of program material. The EQ module is based around the API 2520 op-amp and sports a Triad output transformer for very low noise and a transparent sound.
With Jack’s input, Pultec made a few enhancements to the standard MEQ passive EQ section, which includes the addition of 1.2 and 1.5 kHz centers to the low-mid, addition of 1.2 and 8 kHz to the high-mid (overlaps low-mid section and expands top end), and some minor tweaks to the Q of the high-mid settings.
The ear is especially sensitive to sounds in this region. In this region, even small resonances in studio acoustics and microphone and speaker responses have a very evident effect on the listenability of the sound.
