Synology DS1525+ Reviews

Solid NAS

I purchased the DS1525+ as a replacement for a dead DS1513+. The new model has an external charger (which should be easily replaceable in case it dies). It is also significantly more responsive than the old one. It's been operating very well for me. The only reason why I dropped one star is because the new model now only has one USB type A port in the back, which limits the number of peripherals I can connect (APC, external disk, etc.). I can use a hub though, but still... it'd be nice to have more than one (the DS1513+ had 2 USB-2 and 2 USB-3 ports)

1525+ migration

I bought a DS1515+ in 2016. You know, the one with the Intel Atom C2538? It finally gave out 11/2025. It ran a raid5 (5 8T’s on DSM6.2x & backing up to a DS1513+ via HyperBackup. (the 1513+ is still runs as it only fires up to receive a back up. It will eventually die the same death). I was hesitant to buy another Synology when I heard their new enclosures would only work with their drives. Toss the 5 drives into the old 1513 and copy off to a Ubiquiti? A Qnap? Someone else? I did nothing for months leaving critical files on dropbox while I figured out a new backup strategy. Then in early 2026? Synology lifted their restriction. Research said HyperBackup on DSM 7.2 was compatible with DSM 6.2. So I pulled the trigger in early March. The drives cages were all I had to change. Dropped them all in, connected it up, turned it on, watched & waited, listening to it boot, knowing intimately the sound of the Synology signature boot up sequence— I did hear that, but the drive lights were black. Only that ominous blinking blue light and the sound of spinning fans. I was beginning to worry. It seems like minutes…. Then suddenly all at once all five drive lights were blinking green! Accessing it, the first message said something to the effect of, “it appears you’ve inserted 5 discs from a 1515+ Do you want to migrate them to this 1525+ now?YES! I clicked. Moments later, a new login screen! Same username and credentials. Voila! Everything worked like a charm. All files were there, it even looks like hyper back up will work but really I don’t care I can just write over it. It is rare these days to have something go so flawlessly without having a single issue. It was like an old Macintosh— it just works. Remember your mileage may vary. It was easy for me because both enclosure architectures were in the same group. This is ***very important*** so read your documentation on the Synology website about enclosure compatibility when migrating between architectures.

Does this unit work with seagate ironwolf pro hard disks? If not, which disks are compatible?
Asked by: AV
Synology got so much grief from trying to sell their own branded hard drives as the only ones that were fully compatible that they’ve changed their tune. They are back to allowing 3rd-party drives. I have a Synology DS418play NAS and use 4 x 16 TB Seagate IronWolf Pro hard drives. They are fully compatible and used to be on the list of compatible HDDs. They’ll work fine!
