TASCAM DR-40XP Reviews

Top recorder for the money in 2026!

By Manuel
Rated 5 out of 5

The new preamps on the updated DR40XP at this price point really make it the top recorder to buy in 2026. The built in mics are great and have very low noise. Coupled with two XLR inputs, you can have up to 4 mics altogether and the ability to mute any two at a time. This is really a great recorder for those new to field recording or needing a backup audio for their video work. One thing I wish it had is a 3.5mm mic input, but a Rode VXLR easily fixes that.

DR-40 Upgrade

I have the original DR-40 (not even DR-40X!). Honestly, it still works great, but I figured that it was time to upgrade. Based on the performance of the 40XP, I’m very glad I did! The sound quality upgrade is huge IMO. The internal mics sound much better (I believe they are using the same mics as the Portacapture series) and the mic pres are a huge improvement. I’m not really a “spec guy”, and I know that the preamp has a noise floor of -126 dbu, but what I care about is the tonal quality, and the pre-amps just sound really, really good. Very warm and full, but clean as well. It also helps that this unit is 32 bit float. I know that 32 bit float is par for the course at this point for these types of recorders, but it’s the first time I have used it and I would put 32 bit float recording in the “I didn’t know what I was missing” category. The battery life is great at 18 hours which is way beyond what most hand-helds can do. Fast shipping from B&H put the icing on the cake.
