Pros:
* Incredibly beautiful screen
* Best LUT switching system I’ve ever used
* Programmable physical buttons
* Color calibrated
* Extremely responsive touchscreen
Cons:
* Buggy software that still feels like a beta product
* High power consumption
* Long boot-up times
* Some frustrating UI and workflow decisions
My experience with this monitor has been genuinely odd. From a hardware perspective, it feels incredibly premium and checks so many boxes I’ve been looking for in a monitor that doesn’t cost SmallHD money. The display looks fantastic, the touchscreen is excellent, and the LUT workflow is probably the best I’ve used.
Unfortunately, the software side has been rough. I’ve tried every possible method to update the firmware with no success, and support hasn’t responded yet. Attempting to update the HDMI driver gives a “failed MD5 check” error with basically no documentation available. The monitor also repeatedly shows a firmware update notification every time it powers on.
There are other workflow frustrations too. Loaded Log LUTs display incorrectly unless converted through an external utility. APK support technically exists, but the process feels extremely janky. Wireless control for the A7S III/FX3 doesn’t seem ready yet, and wired camera control disconnected constantly during use.
Customization is powerful, but some UI elements can’t be hidden properly. Even in decluttered display mode, lock icons remain visible. The 30-second boot time also became frustrating while filming a wedding where I needed to quickly power the monitor back on between moments.
The vertically stacked battery plates create awkward side-to-side balance issues with larger batteries, and it’s concerning that users are instructed to back up calibration data before firmware updates in case it gets corrupted.
This monitor feels like it could be really great in 1–2 years. Right now, it’s just not there yet.
