OREI HDA-913 Reviews

An Audio Extractor struggling to find a purpose in life

This device did not perform as the description suggests, which is the reason for 1-star. I give B&H customer service 5-stars as they totally took care of me. They will also review the description to see if it needs to be modified, so this review may not be as relevant in the future. What the device can do: It will pass up to 4K60 over HDMI and all the LPCM and bitrate audio with multichannel, as advertised. It will pass Dolby Atmos if you are working with spatial sounds. I did not have any DTS sources to test, but I assume the results will be the same. The device will pass HDR as advertised, including HDR10 and Dolby Vision as HDR10 LLDV (i.e. player led DV). I did not test if it can pass Dolby Vision as sink led, but I would guess that it would not pass the dynamic metadata for that. That all sounds great, but you basically have an HDMI passthrough device with only one HDMI out port, so you could use it to connect two HDMI cables together in a pinch. The device might have some use if it at least provided another output port for HDMI splitting, but it does not. What the device cannot do: It cannot decode or downmix "good" audio. I was excited that an economical device could do HDMI passthrough of up to 4K60 with HDR10 and Dolby Atmos while also extracting analog stereo via the RCA ports. If that is what you are also trying to do, this device will not work for that application. I tested Dolby Digital+ 7.1 bitrate, Dolby Atmos MAT 2.0, Dolby Atmos DD+JOC, and Dolby Atmos TrueHD as HBR. None of it could be downmixed, so the S/PDIF and RCA analog output ports go silent. The only time that you can down mix is when the source is playing LPCM or bitrate stereo or Dolby Digital, but only up to 5.1. In summary, if you are trying to extract any audio from modern multichannel spatial audio, this device will not work for that application. If you are sending legacy audio as stereo or up to 5.1 surround via HDMI, and you want to extract up to 5.1 surround optically via S/PDF while simultaneously extracting analog stereo to RCA output, then this device will work for that narrowly construed application. Hope this helped!
