The DNE 500 Series Pulse Width Modulation Compressor from HAZELRIGG INDUSTRIES borrows its inner circuitry directly from the Hazelrigg VNE and D.W. Fearn's VT-7, with attack and release times optimized to simplify the user interface.
Front-panel controls include a high-pass filter, link switch, bypass switch, and attack/release controls. The high-pass filter makes the compressor less reactive to low frequencies like bass and kick drums. Linking units requires 500 series racks with a link option. The signal path utilizes input and output transformers and high-gain low-distortion solid-state devices. There is a segment LED meter on the front giving visual feedback.
In Action
- Pulse-width-modulation methodology is capable of extremely fast attack and release times
- When compressing bass-oriented instruments, audio artifacts can occur when the release is set too fast
- When linking units, attack and release times will be averaged
- Turn the threshold up on DNE to reference the audio passing through the unit
