Monitor Modes
On a Mac, you can have mirror and extended modes. Mirror mode lets you mirror your desktop across all external displays. Extended mode lets you view a second program onto one or more external displays. With Windows, mirror mode works the same way, but with extended mode, you have the option of using an external display to view a third program.
