Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure

Designed to handle intensive tasks such as direct video editing, the Lockerstor 4 Gen2+ 4-Bay NAS Enclosure from Asustor offers the speed and capabilities to take on almost any project. In addition to featuring four 3.5"/2.5" SATA drive bays, this high-performance network storage enclosure has four M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD slots that may be configured for cache or storage. You can also mix and match M.2 configurations and set up RAID modes depending on your needs. The dual 5GbE Ethernet ports support SMB multichannel technology, which allows you to combine their throughput to reach 10G speeds with compatible devices, giving you the bandwidth to share massive files with your team. Powered by a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron N5105 quad-core processor with 4GB of DDR4-2933 memory, the Lockerstor 4 Gen2+ can deliver up to 590 MB/s read and 555 MB/s write speeds in RAID 5 configuration.

Install a 10G Ethernet network adapter into the PCIe slot for even greater performance. Please note that the PCIe slot is occupied by an M.2 daughter board with all four of the system's M.2 SSD slots. Installing an expansion card requires its removal. The two memory slots support up to 16GB total. Other features include two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 slots that can transfer data at up to 10 Gb/s with compatible devices. There is also an extra USB-A 2.0 port.

Powered by an Intel Celeron Quad-Core Processor
The Lockerstor 4 Gen2+ comes with a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron N5105 Quad-Core processor. The N5105 comes with Intel's 10nm technology and is up to 31% faster than Gemini Lake SoCs. The Celeron N5105 is clocked at 2.0 GHz with a boost speed of up to 2.9 GHz, enabling efficient content creation with the added flexibility of 10 Gigabit Ethernet upgrades.
Four M.2 Slots
The Lockerstor Gen2 series of NAS devices come with four M.2 slots for caching, storage, or both. Either use all slots for one purpose or mix and match depending on your needs. Four M.2 SSD slots bring a number of custom scenarios to your NAS when it comes to accelerating your storage.

With up to four SSDs, a considerable amount of heat can be generated. With extra ventilation, the Lockerstor 4 Gen2+ ensures that all components in your NAS receive cooling.

The Lockerstor 4 Gen2+ has two 5GbE ports, which more than doubles the performance of Gigabit Ethernet devices. But that's not all. Protected from Ransomware
The Lockerstor comes with the most up-to-date version of ADM to help protect against ransomware attacks, with Snapshot Center and Btrfs providing efficient snapshots to easily restore lost data. Other security features found on the Lockerstor are the ability to create one or more replacement administrator accounts, a firewall by ADM Defender that features black and white lists, and the ability to change default ports, disable SSH, and Terminal to prevent remote attacks. MyArchive cold storage hard drive security can also be increased by implementing AES 256-bit encryption.

Snapshot Center
Snapshot Center is a feature for ASUSTOR NAS devices to utilize Btrfs and iSCSI volumes to take snapshots of the information inside a NAS. Snapshot Center supports up to 256 snapshots of a volume and can be done every five minutes, creating a backup that can be restored easily if data is damaged or lost. The 8TB Red Plus 5640 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD from WD is built to handle the workloads of RAID-optimized NAS systems with up to 8 drive bays, including home offices and power users, small to medium businesses, and consumer and commercial NAS systems. No surprises here, great NAS

I don't have any experience with other brands so I'm no help there but there's nothing about the Lockerstor series that I don't like. I also use this to support one person in a home office, the full capabilities of these things appear to be staggering. I bought the AS6704T Gen2+ to replace the AS6604T as the main storage on the network and downgraded the 6604 to backup duty. Either of them are way more than I need for simple network file storage but the 6604 has run for almost 4.5 years and has only been shut down if there's a power outage (UPS shutdown), and I've been extremely happy with it. Full disclosure, this purchase was prompted when the 6604 developed a problem with Slot 1 not showing up on reboot but it turned out to be a simple fix for $0 and due to RAID5 no data was lost. I can't point a finger at why it happened but ultimately it was a non-issue. It's only been about 2 weeks with the 6704 but so far it's exactly what I expected. It was simple to set up and has more features than I'll ever use. I will say that if you're planning to use it for more than a file locker, fill it up with RAM. I added a 4G chip and that's not enough for VirtualBox to run Win11 smoothly. It probably would do better with some flavor of *nix but if I continue with VirtualBox I'll get two 8s. The dual 5G ports in the Gen2+ are nice, with LAN aggregation you get a theoretical 10G connection but naturally you need a switch that supports 5G. I was only slightly disappointed that enabling LAN aggregation disables WOL/WOW, but power scheduling gets around that issue and is probably more reliable anyway. NAS to NAS backup is working perfectly, which was high on my list of goals. I'm thrilled with the AS6704T Gen2+, but then I also expected to be. Props to B&H as well. For whatever reason I got this for significantly less than the currently advertised price. My guess is that it was a pricing error however they honored it without skipping a beat. GREAT company, they have certainly earned my business. This was just another example of why they are the go to for tech purchases.
