Photographers' Formulary 07-2005 overview

  • 1Description

Photographers Formulary Print Frames are made at the Formulary from high quality oak, with a felt-lined, hinged back board for print inspection.

Pressure clips hold your negative secure while printing.

All frames are made one inch bigger than the size quoted. (i.e. an 8x10" frame actually has a glass size of 9x11" so that you get a full 8x10" print).

Frames are stained black.

Photographers' Formulary 07-2005 reviews

11x14" Contact Print Frame is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice contact frame for Alt. Process This is a high quality split back frame for long exposure contact printing. It works quite well for that purpose. I would not recommend it for use with regular enlarger papers, only because you will curse the springs. Those springs are there to ensure that the registration remains while checking exposure during printing with printing-out-papers. They are overkill with normal (developing-out) paper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for cyanotypes After doing several cyanotypes without this product I was having trouble getting consistently sharp results so I took the plunge and got a contact frame. Now I will not say that you have to have a contact frame in order to get sharp cyanotype prints but this makes it a lot easier. The only problem that I have encountered with the frame is that the front glass sits a little below the frame, so if the sun (light source) is not directly above the frame there will be a slight shadow cast. This is really only a problem if you are using a 12x15 sheet of paper and the image goes all the way to the edge of the paper. This problem is easily solved by tilting the frame towards the direction of the sun.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but not great I bought this to do contact sheets. I use Printfile filers with 7 rows of 6 negatives and print those on 9.5x12 paper. As such, I can't comment on using large format negatives. I've been pleased with the quality of the contact sheets that I've made with this. It's a very sturdy, heavy unit. The downsides: * The latches are really hard to open and close. They do what they're supposed to, but after a couple of prints my fingers are tired. * Potential for splinters, especially on the back board.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed with quality The sample of the contact printing frame that I received was poorly made. The corners were joined by corrugated metal fasteners like a low-end picture frame and were not even tightly butted together. Instead of the usual spring steel closures the back was held in with a hinged snap mechanism that couldn't be adjusted once it loosened up. Although not overpriced, I returned it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Simply DOESN'T do what it is supposed to This contact printing frame has the purpose of keeping a sheet of paper ABSOLUTELY flat against the glass. It doesn't.In other words it doesn't do what it is supposed to do: the prints invariably come out with soft spots in the central area, an easily predictable defect, given the engineering of the frame; all eight of the clips on the back are applying their pressure along the edges and there is nothing to keep the center flat against the glass. The frame--as beautifully manufactured as it is--is simply faulty in its design. When one is making platinum/palladium prints with it, the financial injury of buying this klutzilla in the first place is coupled with the monetary insult of 5 or 6 wasted prints (total $ value more than the price of the frame!) until the photographer finds out that the fault is not his, but the equipment's.If this was happening 15 years ago when I still used these frames for contact prints (does a single person still make those nowadays!?) I would have thought the frame was acceptable for its purpose.Nowadays these frames are used primarily for alternative processes where an absolute flatness of paper and negative against glass is required; thus this frame is simply a piece of garbage. My advice is to avoid it and go to * or B&H's excellent used department and buy a vintage frame that has the cross-plate design (or whatever it is called engineer-wise) where two perpendicular pieces of metal act as springs and apply the most pressure to the center: also not perfect but better than this. The answer to absolute flatness is well known: a vacuum frame.Wishing to return this sorry excuse of a frame to B&H I found out that I had misplaced the receipt, so now I am stuck with an overpriced 11x14 that I will attempt to salvage by using as a frame to display some artwork in.Altogether, this has been a disappointment and a waste of time and money, and I am still looking for an explanation as to why a reputable, even venerable company as Photographers Formulary will put its name to such a badly made piece of equipment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really solid but... The clamps that hold the back in place are really sturdy heavy duty clamps. So over all this will make a really nice contact print without the paper or negative slipping around. That being said these small spring loaded clamps are way to heavy duty for this frame, I have an easier time loading a mouse trap than flipping the latches on this thing (I think the mouse trap hurts less when it snaps on your finger too). The frame works great but the latches are way over engineered.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing I read all the good and bad reviews of this contact print frame, and decided to take a chance on it. I really, really wanted this to be good! When it arrived, I saw that it is well constructed and the glass is flawless. Unfortunately, the design of this frame does not work very well. It uses clamps instead of springs. The clamps along the sides are tight, but they put uneven pressure on your negative and paper. This results in blotchy areas on the print. I am using big 11x14 negatives. If you were using it to make reference contact sheets of 35mm negs, it would be fine. But for a fine print from a big single-image negative, the uneven pressure ruins the image. On the plus side, B&H was very nice to me about returning this item. I opted for a store credit, because I'll always need more stuff from B&H Photo!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice work I was hesitant to purchase this frame because of the price and the illustration, but I am pleased with it. The quality is very nice and the prints have turned out well. The backing provides a lot of pressure. My only complaint is that the back clips are hard for me to open and close. I hope they will loosen a bit with time (or I'll get stronger).
