Neumann SKM184MT Overview

The SKM 184 MT Stereo Matched Microphone Pair from Neumann is a kit containing a stereo matched pair of the KM 184 microphones. The microphones feature cardioid, pressure condenser elements intended for live sound reinforcement and broadcast as well as recording applications. The KM 180 series microphones feature an output stage based on the KM 100. Transformerless circuitry and balanced output result in high output gain with a very low noise floor and no coloration to the output signal. The KM 184 is powered via +48V phantom power.

The stereo pair are matched in sensitivity and frequency response and provide optimum results when capturing performances or ambiance. The 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response provides flexibility for use in a wide range of recording situations. The KM 184's cardioid polar pattern provides a generous pick up area and is suitable for ambiance or spot miking instruments such as piano, wind instruments organ and choir. The KM 184 handles sound pressure levels up to 138 dB allowing close miking of instruments high in transient (peak) level response.

Cardioid Polar Pattern
The cardioid polar pattern minimizes room ambiance and noise caused by additional instruments, monitors, vocalists etc. The KM 184 is suitable for X,Y style stereo capturing, percussion, wind instruments, piano, leslie speaker, and guitar amplifiers.
KM 100 Based Output Stage
The KM 184 features the same output stage electronics as the KM 100. Transformer-less circuitry and quiet balanced output design ensure a clean, high-gain output signal without any coloration. The KM 184 is powered via +48V phantom power, and its 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response provides flexibility for use in a wide range of recording situations. The KM 184 can handle sound pressure levels up to 138 dB, allowing fairly close miking of instruments.

End game for acoustic instruments

Use this pair for mandolin and guitar. Overall, it's amazing, and should be for the price. Sound is detailed, balanced, with forgiving off axis response (pleasant room reverberations). I think the lack of switches is a positive. Nothing to mess up. I put this on a stereo bar in XY, close mic'd, and it results in a easy to use setup that gets amazing results. The box is pretty, but not practical. I wouldn't throw the box into a gig bag, because it's too nice. I wouldn't keep the mics in the box because the clips are pretty tight and take work to attach to the mics (so I leave them on). But for this price, you better give me a box! I really only needed one, but upgraded to the pair mainly because this goes on sale often, and price per mic was heavily discounted.

I immediately loved how these sound on all of my acoustic instruments, and am actually surprised at how little background noise they pick up, even in an untreated room.  Funny enough, for years I read other people say that these mics were 'too bright' sounding, and in my own experience, I don't agree with that at all.  With these, I'm able to put my attention back on to playing music and stop endlessly tweaking recordings in post-production because of poor sound; so for me, that's worth the premium cost.

Certainly. The KM 184 is suitable for X,Y style stereo capturing, percussion, wind instruments, piano, leslie speaker, and guitar amplifiers. The KM 184 can handle sound pressure levels up to 138 dB, allowing fairly close miking of instruments (including drums). Cardioid microphones, which make up the majority of models, are a 50:50 mixture of pressure and pressure gradient transducers. Pressure condenser microphones:This type is provided with a high-tuned diaphragm. The diaphragm mass(together with the vibrating air mass) is made small, the restoring forcelarge. Blind holes in the backplate, and sometimes an additional air pocketdiminish the stiffness of the air cushion sufficiently to bring the diaphragmresonance into the region of the microphones upper cut-off frequency. Inthe rising portion of the resonance curve (below the resonant frequency),the diaphragm velocity then increases with frequency and ensures the requiredconstant diaphragm excursion

Have users enjoyed good results when recording live string and orchestral performances? Would you recommend a different model for strings? Perhaps even a different brand?

It would depend on the size of the string section and the stereo technique you are using. For a small string section recorded in an XY or ORTF technique the KM 184 is perfect. But if you are talking about a full string section 30 to 60 people then no not the right mic. The capsule is to small and the stereo techniques are not broad enough. I would suggest the Microtech Gefell M 930 Large-Diaphragm . The stereo technique I would suggest the MS or Blumlein. With these mic's and either of those techniques the stereo imaging would be spectacular.

Can these also accept capsules from SKM-185? In other words; are they interchangeable?

No. These are fixed capsules. The KM 100 series has interchangeable capsules.
