LEE Filters PLC105 overview

  • 1Description

Lee 105mm Circular Polarizer Filter - Anyone involved in photography knows that Lee is a top-quality name in filtration. Whether for lighting or cameras, resin or gel, Lee makes filters for all scenarios. Their reputation is impeccable and they also are characterized by high standards for customer service.

Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. Filter factor is between 2.3 and 2.8 (approx. +1.3 stops).

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation. Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems).

If you are using the Lee Foundation Kit Filter Holder you need the optional 105mm Accessory Front Thread Adapter Ring (LEFARPFK105).

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Can dramatically enhance a blue sky and make the clouds more prominent
Used best at right angle to the sun
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

    LEE Filters PLC105 reviews

105mm Circular Polarizer Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Polarizer I have only used the product for the past two weeks. It's well constructed and works as a polarizer should. It's on the expensive end of polarizer filters but you get what you pay for. The main issue is mounting it on the Lee Filter holder using the adapter ring - you can not use it at the wide end (16 to approx 20 or 22mm) of a wide angle lens as it will create dark vignetting (from being too far away from the lens). You must zoom in until you no longer see the vignette. Optically the filter is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent polarizer This is a great polarizer that works with the Lee Foundation kit. The only thing annoying about this is that it has been tricky to find the circular adapter ring that screws onto the foundation kit to allow you to attach the polarizer (until recently). The 105mm polarizer allows you to adjust this without changing the orientation of the filter holder so you can use this with ND grads without any problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for LEE Foundation Kit I have planned to buy this polarizer for a while but can't find the adapter anywhere. Finally I found a used adaptor on line so I order this polarizer. It is really convenient to use with the LEE Foundation Kit. I can remove the polarizer attached to the lens which also helps to reduce vignetting. I use it with the Canon 17-40mm f4, full frame 5D Mkii without vignetting at even 17mm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Inappropriate packaging Recieved this expensive glass wrapped in tissue paper !!??To use on Nikon lenses I had to screw on an adaptor ring to the Lee filter holder. After using the tiny brass screws on the holder and then attaching the polarizer I now have to make or find a protective holder that can fit the two joined. Once again I feel the manufacturer could be more customer helpful by providing a deeper carry case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of glass! Excellent circular polarizer. Have a look at the attached image - left is without, right is with this polarizer. The image is otherwise unedited except for some slight sharpening and re-sizing. It speaks for itself!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product I'm really happy with this polarizer. I recently purchased the Lee Foundation Kit and decided to go all out and spring for this as well. The only thing I don't like is the case. Why does such an expensive product come in a soft shelled case? I'm really concerned that this will not protect the polarizer enough, and I'm very careful with my gear. Even the Big Stopper comes with a metal tin.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from smooth easy adjustment Just the filter by itself is 5-star. It has a very smooth viscous drag on the adjustment, and I find the knurled ring is bigger and easier to grab than the B&W 72mm and 77mm I previously had. The reason I got this filter is to use it with the Lee foundation kit, as it is not possible to effectively use my previous B&W 72 and 77 mm with the foundation kit and big-stopper + ND grads. So I got the 105 mm front thread adapter ring for the Lee foundation kit and added this polarizer. But the Lee foundation kit, even with only a pair of 2 mm filter guides, and using the recessed mounting ring for wide angle lenses - it still puts the 105 mm polarizer almost 25 mm in front of the lens. So it works well down to 35 mm wide angle, but at 24 mm I see vignetting from the circular polarizer. I thought that at 105mm it would be plenty big. But because the foundation kit spaces it so far away from the lens, it is not big enough for anything wider than 35mm

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good and Pricey I shoot chrome and sensors in difficult or complicated light. All the images go through more or less extensive post. It's paramount to have a good starting point if you want the job done as economically as possible, so my Lee system (Pola, NDs, CCs), used with a good spot meter, saves me time and money on the computer. At the very least they make sure I don't blow the highlights, which would ruin the image, but more often they give me an almost-ready image right out of the box!
