Sennheiser MKE 2 Gold Overview

The black Sennheiser MKE 2 is a tough, subminiature lavalier microphone renowned for its dependable performance among industry professionals, including broadcast and field audio engineers, theater performers, presenters, and film/video crews. The mic’s dual-diaphragm design resists sweat and moisture, while the tiny size offers a discreet appearance that’s easy to conceal—even resisting contact and rustling noise when hidden in clothing and costumes.

With its wide 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range and ability to handle up to 142 dB SPL, the MKE 2 lav provides clear, intelligible reproduction of speech, dialog, and vocals. The microphone's omnidirectional polar pattern picks up sound from 360° around the capsule, helping to deliver consistent levels, even when the talent turns away from the mic capsule.

The MKE 2 is available with a variety of connectors to accommodate wireless transmitters and other compatible equipment. This model features a locking 3.5mm connector wired for Sennheiser transmitters. Two frequency caps are supplied, allowing you to tailor the high-end frequency response depending on the application. Accessories include the MZQ222 mic clip and the MZW2 windscreen.

Industry-Proven Performance
Subminiature Size with a Quiet, Dependable Cable
The MKE 2's subminiature profile enables the microphone to be used on stage or on camera while remaining inconspicuous. The mic can easily be hidden beneath clothing or costumes, while the stranded, steel-reinforced cable is designed to minimize clothing and rustling noise.
Sweat-Resistant Construction
The unique dual-diaphragm umbrella mic capsule design provides reliable protection from perspiration and moisture.
Ample Headroom for Loud Vocals
The MKE 2 Gold Series is designed to handle broadcast and theater applications, including loud vocals and instruments up to 142 dB, without distortion.
Omnidirectional Polar Pattern
The forgiving omnidirectional polar pattern picks up sound from all around the mic and provides a consistent frequency response, even for off-axis sound. This helps to supply clear, intelligible speech and vocals, even when the talent isn't speaking directly toward the microphone.
Wide Frequency Response
With its wide, linear 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range and excellent transient response, the MKE 2 provides accurate and transparent reproduction of speech, vocals, and instruments. Frequency caps are supplied to boost the high-end frequencies, often used if the mic is concealed in clothing.

Can this be plugged directly into a Zoom H1?
Asked by: Ryan
It will work but I would recommend the zoom lav with the zoom recorder... its cheaper plus it seems to be wired a little different and you get a better signal over all...

Would the MKE 2 be a good match with the DJI Mic? ...

Would the MKE 2 be a good match with the DJI Mic? I'm not sure if the locking jack will be a problem.
Asked by: Fabian
No, the MKE 2 is not compatible for use with the transmitter for the DJI Mic Wireless Mic System. High-end lavalier mics are not a good match. We have tested a variety of lavalier mics and the ones that we have found to work best are the Saramonic DK3G Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone with 3.5mm TRS Connector (B&H # SADK3G), the RODE Lavalier II Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone (B&H # ROLAVALIERII), the Shure MOTIV MVL Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone for Smartphones (B&H # SHMVL35MM), and the Saramonic SR-M1 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone Cable with 3.5mm TRS Connector (B&H # SASRM1).

question

This MKE2 is giving me distortion even though my levels are far from clipping. I got this mic with the Sennheiser AVX bundle and recently shot a training video. My levels peaked around -24 to -12db, however, during playback I can hear high frequencies distort. It gets much noticeable once I process the audio and raise the level. I normally record straight into camera and also into an external recorder with this lav mic, however this issue keeps recurring. Why does this mic keep distorting my sound? Any help or tips would definitely be appreciated!
Asked by: Abraham S.
There are a number of things to consider when trying to source the cause of distortion. The question is where is the distortion occurring? Is the mic element overloading due to high SPL, or is the transmitter clipping because of improper gain staging? If the receiver is outputting line level and the input on the camera or recorder is set to mic, that may be the cause. Also, the gain settings on the preamp of the recording device needs to be set accordingly as it is a major part of the audio chain as well.

Why does the black version look different than the beige one? I've bought the black one before and it looks different. Is it the same mic? wrong image?
Asked by: Don
The actual microphones are the same, but the photo that shows the cable with strain relieve just below the mic seems to be an older version.

Looking into using the MKE2 with the tascam ...

Looking into using the MKE2 with the tascam dr-10l would that work? As well as would there be any downsides to doing that?
Asked by: Donald
I just did exactly this, while it does work the Tascam DR10-L only outputs 2V whereas the Sennheiser requires 7.5V. With the Tascam at the highest mic gain setting (H+) I was having trouble getting the input levels high enough.

Will I have quality drop by plugging the 3.5mm variant of this mic into a Zoom H6 using a 3.5mm to XLR adapter?

The quality should be fine as long as the proper adapter is used. We recommend this adapter for your application: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/327244-REG/Ambient_Recording_EMP35_P48_Electret_Converter_for.html?sts=pi&pim=Y.
