question
can it be layed on its side or does it have to stand up like in the photo ?
The Back-UPS 350/500 User's Manual does not show any orientation other than vertical. The Placement instructions in the manual do not mention orientation at all. The unit does have rubber feet on the bottom and a vent at the top. The right side feels warm near the top vent. Using it on its side would cause the vent to be less effective since heat rises. Heat shortens the life of its battery. I called the number listed in the manual to ask, but just missed them. Their US & Canada # is 8-0-0-8-0-0-4-2-7-2. Only the left 3 outlets are battery backed, but all outlets are somewhat surge protected. The outlets are not spaced evenly so it can get too crowded to use them all at once. When lights etc. go out it will emit a piercingly painful sound until you push the button on the back and only supply a few minutes of power, but enough to safely shut yourself down. The deafening sound seems unnecessary and I pity my pets if it happens when no one is home.
