Leica 12004 overview

  • 1Description

The Leica Viewing Magnifier M 1.25x is a small and practical accessory for all Leica M rangefinder cameras. By enlarging the viewfinder image by twenty-five percent, it facilitates image composition when using lenses with focal lengths of 50mm and upwards. At the same time, it also improves focusing accuracy by expanding the effective measuring base. Especially useful for the M line since the different viewfinder models offer different magnification ratios.

Made of black anodized aluminium, the viewing magnifier is screwed into the camera eyepiece. It also has a thread for correction lenses to compensate for vision defects.

The small accessory is secured with a chain and connected to the camera eyelet with spring catches. The viewing magnifier can be kept in its leather case with snap fastener and attached to the camera strap when not in use. The magnifier is thereby protected and is easily accessible whenever required.

    Leica 12004 reviews

Viewfinder Magnifier 1.25x for M Cameras is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatly improved focus with 50 and 90mm I was having some trouble getting accurate and repeatable focussing when using the 90mm and 50mm Leica lenses. My eyes are 53 years old. So they just aren't what they used to be. I now keep this image magnifier on my M9 at all times, even when shooting with the 28 and 35mm lenses. With the magnifier in place, the 35mm frame lines are just barely visible in the viewfinder. For the 28mm lens, I just use the 18mm external viewfinder mounted on the top of the camera. I just imagine some bright lines a little inside the 24mm bright lines in this viewfinder. If you're having trouble getting repeatable, accurate focussing with longer lenses, I highly recommend this well made, but expensive Leica gadget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes Focussing Easier I use this magnifier on an M9 fitted with a 50mm Summilux lens. It's a perfect combination. The 50 mm frame line is at the viewfinder's limit for eyeglass wearers, but that's a plus. The 50 mm image just about fills the viewfinder. You become unaware that the magnifier is on the camera. It just makes focussing that much easier for tired old eyes like mine. This product is jewel-like; made with superb quality. I took the cord off the magnifiier and put it away with the leather case for safe keeping. I love this device!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Accessory for Leica ever! If you want to use the Leica M system to its fullest then you have to have this magnifier. Period. If not, pretty much forget about consistent results from your 90 and 135 lenses. Before using this little magnifier my in focus ratio with my 90 was about 1 in 10, after I started using it, 10 in 10. Same with my 135. Yeah, it's THAT good. Also, with the 1.25, you can still see the 35mm frame lines in the standard .72 viewfinder. If you wear glasses you might have some difficulty, but if not you're there with no problem. OK, yeah, it's a little expensive, but it's Leica, what's new? And of course, it's built like a tank. You can feel this isn't some cheap plastic lens, it's solid and heavy like real glass elements should.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from With eyeglasses - good for 50mm and up Used with eyeglasses, for me this adapter expands the 50mm frame lines to almost the entire viewable area of the viewfinder. It makes focusing 50mm and 90mm lenses much easier. With my glasses on, this adapter is not usable with lenses wider than 50mm, which is fine by me. Very good quality, as would be expected, and the leather pouch is an excellent quality touch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Aide a 65 year old's focus I place the 1.25x magnifier on the range finder and found it still giving a full view with the bright lines of the 50 mm Sumilux and was still able to view the exposure controls. I added the 1.5 Leica M Diopter and am getting the razor sharp images the M9 P is capable of delivering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helps focus on 90mm lens I got this magnifier because I was having difficulty achieving consistent focus using my 90mm Elmarit wide open at 2.8 while at portrait type distances. The magnifier improves matters significantly. However I found that it seems to have a negative diopter of about -1 built in. As the Leica already has a -0.5 diopter built in, I needed a -1.5 for correction for my perfect (when I have glasses on) eyesight. You will need to unscrew any corrective lens already in the viewfinder and screw it into the magnifier. I didn't see this in the literature anywhere.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Helpful but not perfect Leica would do all M users a tremendous favor if they'd simply put a diopter adjustment on the viewfinder of the M camera. Would it kill them to do this? I know it would forever alter the whole Oskar Barnack mojo, but he's been dead for 100 years (or so). Absent this very simple customer focused improvement to an otherwise fine photographic tool, we're stuck using substitutes such as the 1.25x and 1.40x magnifiers. I've tried the 1.4x and it made everything a bit fuzzy, regardless of the lens. Now I'm trying the 1.25x and it's a little better i.e. a little less fuzzy. But frankly it does not provide as much benefit for focusing my Noctilux as I had hoped for. Until Leica puts in a few 21st century touches on the M (besides the nearly useless Movie mode), this is as good as it gets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A wonderful little accessory This little accessory makes a huge difference in focussing speed and accuracy. It is small, unobtrusive and the little accessory strap stays out of the way by using a kind of bearing system so that it slides to the side rather than flopping around in the way. Also, the magnifier is nice and bright. It does exactly what it says but my goodness, is it ever expensive. But let's be honest, is that really a surprise?
