Leica 12004 Overview

The Leica Viewing Magnifier M 1.25x is a small and practical accessory for select Leica M rangefinder cameras, from the M (Typ 240)-series and earlier. By enlarging the viewfinder image by twenty-five percent, it facilitates image composition when using lenses with focal lengths of 50mm and upwards. At the same time, it also improves focusing accuracy by expanding the effective measuring base. Especially useful for the M line since the different viewfinder models offer different magnification ratios.

Made of black anodized aluminium, the viewing magnifier is screwed into the camera eyepiece. It also has a thread for correction lenses to compensate for vision defects. An optional Thread Adapter is also available for use on the M10-series of cameras.

The small accessory is secured with a chain and connected to the camera eyelet with spring catches. The viewing magnifier can be kept in its leather case with snap fastener and attached to the camera strap when not in use. The magnifier is thereby protected and is easily accessible whenever required.

In recent years, my eyesight degraded and getting harder to focus. With this magnifier, it helps even with 50mm summicron on M10-P.

Helpful but not perfect

Leica would do all M users a tremendous favor if they'd simply put a diopter adjustment on the viewfinder of the M camera. Would it kill them to do this? I know it would forever alter the whole Oskar Barnack mojo, but he's been dead for 100 years (or so). Absent this very simple customer focused improvement to an otherwise fine photographic tool, we're stuck using substitutes such as the 1.25x and 1.40x magnifiers. I've tried the 1.4x and it made everything a bit fuzzy, regardless of the lens. Now I'm trying the 1.25x and it's a little better i.e. a little less fuzzy. But frankly it does not provide as much benefit for focusing my Noctilux as I had hoped for. Until Leica puts in a few 21st century touches on the M (besides the nearly useless Movie mode), this is as good as it gets.

Asked by: Louis
With the 1.25x magnifier the 35mm frame lines should be visible at or very near the edges of the overall view through the rangefinder for a user NOT wearing glasses.

Does this particular item Spin freely on a separate ring fitted between the optics for better installation or is that only the x.40? I have both but only my 40 has the rotating bezel which is particularly annoying in the installation process.
