Canon EW-83E overview

  • 1Description

The EW-83E Lens Hood from Canon is a 77mm petal shaped lens hood designed for the 17-40mm f/4L USM and the 10-22mm EF-S lenses.

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Note: Does fit the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens but does NOT fit the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens

Canon EW-83E reviews

EW-83E Lens Hood is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 137.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product This product is perfect, good quality, easy to use, helps to take good shots without the effect of unwanted light, protects the lens for accidents. I wanted to give 4 stars, because this product belongs to a lens that's about 700$ by the time. There's a L class lens at the same price. When you buy a L class lens it comes with a lens hood. Canon's policy No L class, no lens hood is silly. Lens hood must come with the lenses depending on the price. Anyway, i have a Canon Zoom Pack 1000 Holster-Style Bag. Even the hood is reverse mounted to the lens with my T2i body it doesn't fit the bag. This information may help someone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works. I've got it mounted on a 10-22mm. It DOES provide flare reduction if used properly, but I purchased it just as much for lens protection as anything else. It does an adequate job, as long as you're not stupid with it. It's sturdy plastic, matte black interior (of a very fine felt feel) - quality product. My only gripe is that Canon STILL doesn't include these things with their products. Can't be hard to toss in there with an $800 lens... seriously. Also, it's huge. If you're packing compact, forget it. 4.75 at its widest point. Reversing it on the lens does nothing to help this. Overall - Simple product, simple functions, which it performs without any problems whatsoever. Worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Hood This is an excellent lens hood that I use on the Canon 10-22mm. I thought about buying a 3rd party lens hood because they are about $ cheaper, but decided to go with the Canon because I own another Canon lens hood and I'm very happy with the quality. One main difference between the Canon lens hood and the 3rd party lens hood is that the Canon one has a black felt like material on the inside of the lens hood adjacent to the lens itself. The 3rd party lens hoods are just a flat black plastic. I believe the felt on the Canon helps to reduce any glare or reflection. For the extra money, I went with the Canon lends hood and I'm happy that I did.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A necessity for wide-angle zooms The EW-83E Lens hood is a necessary attachement for Canon Wide-angle zoom lenses. In addition to providing image protection against stray light entering from the edges of the field of view, it also provides modest protection and shock absorbtion for the front of the lens. Its wide profile is both a help and hinderence. The help is that you can attach and manipulate screw-on filters because of the ample room. You can adjust a polarizer or a split neutral density without removing the hood. It is a hinderance because it widens the lens profile making it difficult to store in compartments in camera bags.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big Hood! It's certainly annoying that Canon does not include hoods with their lenses. While this makes sense with cheaper lenses, more expensive non-L series hoods should include them. While it was a pain to drop extra money for a hood, it was definately worth it, especially on my 10-22mm. The fit is perfect, and the inner portion has a thin velvet applied to grab dust and other particles. While you can reverse this hood for storage, I don't recommend it, as it is so huge, and could deform. It is a superb hood, but a word of caution - IT'S HUGE. While I can't give it negative marks for its size (as it has to be), just be cautious of this, as it will probably have to occupy a seperate space in your bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything works well under the hood... I recently purchased an L-Series 17-40mm lens and found myself needing a hood. Aside from the benefits of occluding light, it also works well as something of a protective measure for the delicate surface of the lens itself. It's flower-petal design keeps it light and it functions well in both wide shots and those that are closer. The only thing that I find that is lacking is a truly solid fit. All of my other hoods take some effort to remove; however, this one is a little loose - whether that is a function of the hood or the lens' age, I'm not sure. All in all, an awesome product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Out Of Round My hood which I received April 2011 should not be sold. It's Oval not round. Off by 1/4 and allows light to enter at the lens thread. Although there was no need to measure, because a round Hood should fit into the box irregardless how it is faced. This one fits only one way. Since then I have been reading about using a hood on a 10-22mm lens, and the pro's say a hood a 10-22mm is waste of money, for that reason I chose not to replace it. And I don't know if I can trust Canon Hoods anymore or buy them online because returning them is costly when one has to pay coming & going shipment yet received nothing in return.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice hood...a must have I bought this hood for an upcoming trip to the Grand Canyon. I needed one for my new Canon 10-22 wide angle lens that I also just purchased. There isnt much to say about the hood other than, its just a hood. Fits well and is made well. I'm not quite sure why Canon doesnt include a hood with their lenses like most other manufacturers do but since they dont, I purchsed this one.
