Canon MT-24EX overview

  • 1Description

The MT-24EX is a twin-flash set-up (similar to a ringflash) for the EOS system that has every feature and capability imaginable. Employing Canon's E-TTL, it takes full advantage of the flash performance of the EOS-1V, EOS-3, and other E-TTL supported cameras by allowing for shutter speeds above the normal sync range. Twin flashes fire at even power, or can be varied over an eight-stop range for dramatic directional lighting that emphasizes the relief of the subject. One or more 580EX, 550EX, 430 EX, or 420EX Speedlites can be used as wireless slaves along with the MT-24EX. The controller unit has an illuminated, informative LCD panel. Accepts optional hi-capacity battery packs.

Ratio Control
Manual mode permits variable power from full to 1/64th
E-TTL
Wireless autoflash is capable in conjunction with one or more 580EX or 550EX flashes
Direct attachment
EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (non-IS version), and MP-E 65mm Macrophoto lenses require no adapters. Canon MT-24EX reviews

MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 104.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The indespensible MT-24EX Macro Flash This is a must have tool for 1:1 macro work, especially with live subjects. The unit is light weight, easy to attach, and easy to adjust. With the latest Canon EOS digital SLRs, the flash provides splendid light using ETTL and the flash exposure compensation adjustments in the camera. The built-in focusing lights of the MT-24EX are a game saver in low light and nighttime shooting situations. I can't wait to see what they do for the much needed updating of this unit. LED focusing lights would be brighter and would save battery life. All-in-all a terrific unit that is always in my kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Flash This flash has a lot of ajustment capabilities, so, with trial and error experimentation you can probably get it to do what you want. The full output is quite bright, and I usually use flash exposure compensation to reduce it. There is a focusing lamp feature, but it is not very useful, so it's best to have some additional lighting source available when you are focusing. The only thing that I would complain about is that mounting the flash holder part that attaches to the lens is a little bit tedious and time consuming. This is only an issue if you have more than one macro lens that you want to use it with. Otherwise, if you have only one lens, you can just leave it attached all the time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good flash, old technology This flash appears to be very good at providing light in macro situations. It allows powering both lights individually and you can rotate them around the lens (to a point). However, this flash is using noticably older tech than the 580 EXII, which is very quiet, has a better mounting system onto the flash shoe, and offers more custom functions. The MT-24EX feels quite old by comparison. Finally, this flash will not fit on my 100mm f2.8 IS Macro without an adapter, and when you use the adapter, the flash will not fit on the adapter if you have a lens filter on the adapter. You have to put the lens filter on the front thread of the flash mount. Overall this is very unacceptable. This flash is quite expensive, and given the popularity of the new 100mm IS Macro, this flash should be bundled with the adapter, or better yet, updated to new tech and actually made to fit the new flagship macro.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must for macro photography This is a must for me for macro photography. The only downfall is that you need to buy a 67 macrolite adapter to attach it to the 100mm macro L lens, and then also a 58mm lens cap to keep the lens covered when the twin flash is attached but not in use. Even though its for macro, you can use it to take normal flash photos that fill the subject very nicely. It works beautifully with macro but the light is usually harsh and creates some unwanted glare even when i use polarizers and diffusers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Canon's macro system is without peer, both in available options, quality, and ease-of-use. As an amateur, I was able to pull this sophisticated flash out of the box, mount it, and adjust the ringlight flash to my new 50D within minutes ... and fire-off crystal-clear macro shots at the end of my 100 mm USM macro lens. This is an incredible piece of equipment and yet easy to use if you just read the instructions and follow them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You need it If you know macro, you know you need serious light. All the people on the Internet that have a problem with the 65 mp-e (boohoo no AF) and this flash (ermahgerd its so harsh) don't know macro. It's a totally different beast. You need this if you're serious about macro. If you wanna take pictures that make the viewer wish they could shrink to the size of a grain of rice to ride on a bee like Falcor from the Neverending Story, get it and a serious macro setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Cadillac for Macro flash I recently purchased the MT 24EX and am enjoying it very much. It's versatility in the movement of the flashes around the Canon 100 mm macro lens is exceptional. It takes a little getting used to. I would definetly recommend the Stofen plastic covers to cut down the light at times. The only con is: I would like to see a screw on adapter to support the ring. I would like to use it with my Canon 40 - 200 mm lens. It would make shooting hummingbirds easier from a distance. I will try to rig something up for that. Overall, it improves the lighting over my Canon 550EX. What I am using the 550 for is as a remote wireless slave to light the background and avoid all my photos being black in the background.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New World of Macro This is a terrific piece of equipment with a lot of built in flexibility. There is one significant catch--if you don't own a Canon macro lens, there are extra conversion parts needed to attach the flash to the lens you do use--and right now, the Canon 58c adapter is not available. Without it, using this is generally a pain. When it finally arrives, I'll probably absolutely love what it helps me do. I shoot flowers and insects on site, so having a flash that stays in place at different angles is critical.
