Canon 3431B001 overview

  • 1Description

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Canon 3431B001 reviews

MP-E-65 Lens Hood is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from useful accessory This cap protects the front element of the lens and should help reduce flare. In a piece of very good design for this application, the cap screws onto the front of the lens, and it does not interfere with attachment of the Canon macro flashes. (The hood does not interfere with the illumination of the subject by the flash.) The only con on this is that it is a bit tedious to remove, but that is worth it for the compatibility with the flash. The only slight con to this product is that the lens cap cannot be attached with the hood on--noted by other reviewers here. My solution: I keep the whole lens in a pouch when not on the camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Metal hood works well with flash This specialized hood is a well made piece of lightweight metal. It prevents light from your flash or light source from entering the lens directly so it improves image quality and contrast. I use it with the MT-24EX, a 580EX II and with LED lamps. In all cases, it allows me to position the light to hit the subject but not the lens glass. It also protects against scratches by being the first part of your kit to hit obstacles. This is useful because of the very small working distances of the MP-E65 lens. One downside I had not thought about before trying it out is that since the hood is narrower than the lens, you need to take it off before putting a lens cap on. I guess it would be nice if it came with a mini lens cap to go directly on top of the hood but I don't think such a small cap exists.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from But not the lens cap... The build quality of this is excellent. Based on its weight my guess is that it's made of aluminum and fits perfectly onto the MP-E 65. The only problem is that when it's on you can't put the lens cap on, and since it's not a bayonet, you have to screw it on and off each time you want to use the lens. While I'm sure it does a great job blocking any stray light from the MT-24EX that I also bought, I don't really know because it's too tedious to put this hood on and then remove it again with every shot. I don't really use it and I wouldn't recommend it unless there is a compatible lens cap somewhere (which should ship with it to be useful). And the fact is I'm not seeing any flare without it, so I guess it's not really needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have accessory for MP-E 65 This hood has kept me from having subjects bump the font lens element more times than I can count. At least once per shoot when I first started using the MP-E 65. The threads are well matched to the lens; the hood screws on and off easily. Of course it blocks side light. Since you can't put a lens cap on it, I put the hood on when I start shooting and swap it for the lens cap when done. It protects the lens enough that I don't find a need to put the lens cap back on til I put my lens away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORKS WELL Keeps stray light from Canon's dual flash from hitting Canon 65 mm lens. expensive for such a small hood. also must remove hood when not using flash and then put filter back on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice hood Does what it is supposed to do and you actually forget it is on the lens. Screws on and off easily and does not interfere with macro ring flash.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricey Lens Hood Nice specialty lens hood that does what it's supposed to, but definitely over priced by Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Necessary to prevent stray light. A must especially during high magnification to prevent stray light from the flash.
