Mbox is a 2-channel USB audio peripheral specifically engineered to offer quality sound in a very small, very portable package. Powered by Pro Tools LE software, the interface and software combo integrates audio and MIDI recording, editing, real-time mixing and Internet collaboration.
The I/O box features a pair of Focusrite microphone preamps with phantom power, coupled with a 24-bit input-to-output signal path. Mbox supports XLR microphone connections and 1/4" TRS line or instrument inputs, utilizing a Neutrik combo jack. The Hi-Z inputs accommodate guitar and bass pickups as well as temperamental keyboard outputs. Zero-latency monitoring allows one to hear exactly what's happening as it happens, while two analog TRS inserts offer outboard flexibility - e.g., providing outboard compression or reverb from a favorite hardware processor.
On the output side, Mbox includes two analog balanced/unbalanced outputs with 24-bit D/A converters, and a high-quality headphone amp with dedicated volume control. Both 1/8" and 1/4" headphone connectors are supported. 24-bit stereo S/PDIF digital I/O extends the options by providing the opportunity to work entirely in the digital domain.
The express purpose of the Mbox is to allow the user to create a functional, effective studio environment in as much time as it takes boot up a laptop or desktop computer, and launch Pro Tools. This includes situations such as editing on a plane, train or in an automobile. Sessions can be crafted into finished products, or migrated to a full-blown Pro Tools TDM or HD platform. Additionally, Pro Tools LE, which ships with every unit, includes support for DigiStudio, a revolutionary new way to collaborate with other Pro Tools users via the Internet. Using a centralized file sharing system, DigiStudio participants interact from any Net-connected location to exchange Pro Tools session media, from raw audio tracks to MIDI data, plug-in information to automation.
