RODE NT5 Overview

The Rode NT5 is a matched pair of small-diaphragm microphones, featuring full frequency response and low-noise output circuitry designed for general instrument recording and sound reinforcement.

The cardioid polar pattern effectively minimizes audio at the off-axis sections, reducing noise caused by leakage, monitors, additional instruments, etc. The NT5 offers a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz allowing the microphones to be used in a wide variety of applications such as drum overhead miking, stereo capturing of instruments, vocal capturing, etc. The NT5 is powered via +24 or +48V phantom power. The package includes two windscreens and two mic clips.

Cardioid Pattern
The cardioid polar pattern is effective in minimizing off-axis noise due to leakage, additional instruments, room ambiance, etc.
Wide Frequency Response

My second Rode NT5 for use in dialog recording in untreated environments. Excellent results using these mics in a documentary film project.

Impressive little condenser pencil mic

Its literally so compact, lightweight and crisp and clear, this small condenser mic captures a lot of detail, but also captures reverb and background noise of course, it is a condenser. It is very sensitive, ideal for ASMR, get a pair for stereo effect. The included windscreen removes almost entirely the plosives, quite effective, it also adds a bit of warmth to reduce the harshness on the high end. Sounds quite flat so its EQ friendly. Be sure your microphone arm has support for lightweight mics, its so light it might float off from you. I use an ElGato Wave ARM LP and it works perfectly. Can't say how it performs recording instruments since i'm not a musician, but its probably more ideal for that use, still, i find this mic very versatile. Make sure to have a treated room for the echo and reverb. Self noise is super low as well, no hiss or any self noise.

Why are my NT5 pairs creating some buzzing noise ...

Why are my NT5 pairs creating some buzzing noise when the XLR cables are being touched? No matter what gain level it's at, same problem. (Btw, I'm connecting the pairs to the Tascam X8.) Will some better XLR cables help?
Asked by: Zifeng
If buzzing noise occurs when you touch the XLR cables, it could be a problem with the cables and the shielding or a bad ground connection inside the cables. Try swapping out one cable at a time and see if it makes any difference. Keep the mics away from any fluorescent lights, computers, monitors, or other items that tend to hum. You can also try plugging your amplifier, mixer, recorder, interface, or other device that the mics are connected to or any other electronic items within the signal chain into a different power outlet. Sometimes the power line can be the source of the noise. But the first thing to check is the cables. If the cables are good and the noise is coming from the power line, you can use a power conditioner to help eliminate the noise. Can I connect these directly to my Zoom F3 ( since the NT5 has Male 3 Pin XLR) or do I need an XLR connector?
Asked by: Alby
Although the Rode NT5 Cardioid Studio Condenser Microphones have XLR male connections onboard, their form factor would not allow them to be connected directly to the inputs on the Zoom F3 Portable Field Recorder. The NT5 should make connection to the F3's inputs via standard 3-Pin XLR cable.

Will the matched pair still be a matched pair if I replace it with two NT45-O omnidirectional capsules?
Asked by: Simon
If you replace one of the RODE NT5 Cardioid Studio Condenser Microphones in a matched pair, it should be very close, but may not be identical to the other mic.

Can I plug this into a 3.5mm mini input on my DSLR and camcorder with a Kopul LMT-100 adapter on the end?. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/885062-REG/kopul_lmt_100_lo_to_hi_impedance.html
Asked by: Aaron
This mic can not be directly plugged into the 3.5mm input of a camera since they require 48v to operate. If you did want to connect this to a camera, you would a mixer with an xlr input and phantom power such as this BH #SASRPAX1.

Why do you need a match pair?

Why do you need a match pair?
Asked by: Thomas
Hello Tom, A matched pair of microphones keeps them as accurate as possible for stereo recording techniques. If they are different, then the stereo image could potentially change. If you're recording in stereo, we highly recommend the matched pair.

question

Is this suitable for stereo Audio/Video recording in an X/Y arrangement?
Asked by: Nicholas
I've used these mics in both XY and ORTF stereo arrangements The results were always great. The mics provide a clear sound and are sturdy and reliable. At this price point they're very affordable for small diaphragm condensers.
