Davis & Sanford W3 Tripod Dolly Reviews

Bought three dolly's, two are broken within a year

We bought these dolly's about a year ago for use with our high school students. In less than a year two of the three have broken because of a poor/faulty design where the tripod legs anchor. The previous dolly's we had from this same brand had metal 'boots' for the tripod legs to anchor into, whereas this version this part was made with plastic which broke with normal use due to the tension from the screw-down mechanism. Pictures attached. The only positive is that these dolly's are lighter-weight than the previous model.

A good compromise between durablility and low cost

It's 2022 and this dolly has hard plastic wheels made to look like the hard rubber ones that used to come with the dolly. The sliding pieces that hold the tripod legs have been plastic for many years, but have metal inserts for the tightening screws. Great for lights because it makes them easy to move and takes the place of the first sand bag. It's not really made for 'dolly shot' video, but if you have a hard floor and good image stabilization it could do in a pinch. Always explain to the crew that adjustments are 'firm' and never 'tight' if you want the equipment to last.

Is there a way to purchase the knobs that lock the legs?
Asked by: Keith
I'm not sure what you exactly mean by "the knobs that lock the legs", because the leg locks, wheels and wheel locks are a single unit that is custom designed to fit the arms of the dolly. If you just broke one on your own unit you might try the manufacturer (Davis & Sanford, googling "Davis & Sanford W3 Universal Folding Dolly parts". Good luck

Will this work with lightstands such as the Manfrotto 7' ?
Asked by: Barry
I have two, one for more than a decade. I never use either one with anything but tripods. If your light stands are not flimsy, round and open to a 31" footprint they might work. I have found that the dollys work much better with heaver tripods.

Will the Glide Gear or Proaim track wheels work on this dolly?
Asked by: Ellory
We are not aware of track wheels that will work on this dolly. You may want to invest in the Glide Gear SYL-960 Floor/Track Hybrid Tripod Dolly instead as it comes with both standard casters and track wheels. https://bhpho.to/2tCfHBx

question

Does this dolly produce audible squeakiness on video? I'll be using a shotgun mic on a boompole for the audio, and I'm just wondering if it'll be loud enough to catch on the shotgun mic.
Asked by: Way T.
No, not to my knowledge. The wheels don't make any noise. And if so, if you a bit of oil to it that should prevent any minor squeaking sound.
