Matthews Mini Matthellini Reviews

Great, but has QA issues

Indispensible tool on set, especially for those who need to travel light. If this didn't have quality control issues I'd give it 5 stars, however as mentioned in another review, the machining on the threads is sloppy preventing the handle from spinning freely which slows you down on set.

Great for documentary.

Im a documentary director. We own all kinds of grip stuff but this is the work horse. Its smaller them  the regular clamp and have a quarter 20 hole on the end. Its pricey I hate that but its built solid and does the job of 20 items. Worth the purchase.

Bought it for holding my ice light which I'm often rigging in high places and tight corners- I was worried that it would be too small, but it's the perfect size.

Studio necessity

Great for holding foam core and reflectors. The mouth isn't particularly wide on the mini, but is sufficient for most clamp uses. When combined with a C stand this is an excellent tool.

Weighs 7.4 oz measures 5 and 5/8 long.

This is a tool... albeit an over-priced tool... it's a tool none-the-less. Anyone who's familiar with the video industry knows the Matthellini clamp very well. This is a mini-version (obviously)... but here are some meaningful specs, since Matthews doesn't seem to offer this info. This weighs 7.4 oz, or 210 grams and measures 5 and 5/8 from end to end. The knurled rod you see is 3/8 diameter vs. the normal 5/8 diameter which is standard with normal grip gear. The nice thing about this clamp is that it's 100% metal construction. The mini-grip head is plastic, but this? ALL METAL... (with rubber grip padding in the jaws)... so... it's nice, and seems to be very strong. You can even spin the lock up and down with a flick... to open and close the jaw, just like a standard sized Matthellini. I expect this to come in the most handy with small rigging, like you'd do with a GoPro or an LED light... or holding a photography boom... i.e. lower loads than a regular clamp.

Quality control issues

A very useful tool on set and great alternative to the full size clamps, however out of the few I've ordered, they've all had quality control issues. Specifically, the machining on the thread is sloppy and not finished properly leading to a rough surface and the handle not spinning freely.

Indispensible

So many different uses and really light weight. Doesn't replace a full grip head for use on C-Stands, but perfect for travelling doc use.

Is the hole on the top: a 1/4-20" OR is it 3/8-16" on the inside? I mean can I use a "Matthews Baby Pin 5/8" with a 3/8" Threaded Tip", into the hole - on the top of this Mini Clamp? Or do I need a "Baby Pin with a 1/4" Tip"?
Asked by: Jan
We have two versions, one with a 1/4"-20 female threading at the end of the pin, which is what i believe you are asking about. We also have a Mini Matthellini with a male 3/8"-16 threading at the end of the pin.
