ART SLA-2 overview

  • 1Description

The SLA-2 from ART is a rack mountable two-channel power amplifier designed for studio use. It offers a wide frequency response with very low noise and distortion for quality audio output. XLR, 1/4", and Euroblock input connectors are provided, along with five-way binding post outputs. Each channel has its own level control on the front panel.

The SLA-2 can operate in stereo or bridged mode, and features a ground-lift switch to eliminate hum caused by ground loops. The unit offers full protection circuitry for short circuits, overloads, and overheating. If any faults are detected, the amplifier will disconnect the outputs and automatically return to normal operation when the fault is fixed. The SmartFan cooling system offers silent fan-assisted convection cooling to keep the system running reliably.

    ART SLA-2 reviews

    SLA-2 - 2-Channel Power Amplifier is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid and built like a tank This is a conventional sled amp in a 1U package. I use it for bass guitar. Couldn't ask for a better sound. It goes very deep, but still sounds tight -- the hallmark of a well-designed Class AB amp with a traditional (non-switching) power supply. There are no turn-on or turn-off thumps; mechanical relays prevent that from happening. If you don't mind the weight, put this on your short list. Don't let the 1U size fool you; this amp is no slouch within its power limits. Two minor nits: The speaker connectors are a little tough to work with, but they do the job. And the blue power LED is way too bright, but it can be taped over. By the way, construction quality is outstanding. These things are made in Taiwan and do not have that slapped-together feel of products made elsewhere. The term tank comes to mind.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from solid and powerful in only 1 rack space It's only been a few weeks, but this amp is the perfect power amp for my 4RU bass rig. Paired with the BBE compressor, the sound is powerful and transparent. I was looking for something like my Gallien Kreuger RB800 only in stereo (with twice the power) to power a 2x10 and a 1x15 cabinet, with stability down to 2 Ohms and ability to run continuously into 4 ohms on both (something that the GK couldn't do well). The construction of the SLA-2 is very solid and should hold up to road use well. The transformer is a massive toroid and the output transistors (tucked away beneath the heatsinks on each side) are solid quality. Perfect for clean, powerful, and punchy bass! I'm very happy with the purchase, and for the level of quality, this is truly a bargain, especially compared to the bigger and more expensive, yet similarly powerful, bass amps out there.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from If it wasn't for the transformer hum... Great little amp. It powers 4 Ohm speakers effortlessly. Unfortunately, since I was using this nearfield, I could readily hear significant transformer hum during quiet passages or no music output. So, the black background isn't as black even as some midfi stuff. I'm not sure what competition they really have at this price point though. Pretty good otherwise. Bass was authoritative and tight, treble wasn't etched, mids were clear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice amp Compact quality amplifier, great for smaller installation. The ability to lock out the gain controls with the included blanking panel is a nice feature as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than I Expected I use the SLA-2 with a BBE bass pre-amp to run two Eminence CB15 15 bass guitar speakers. This amp has more power than I will ever need. George Red Taylor
