Lowel 55 overview

  • 1Description

This is a DV Creator 55, TO-84Z Case four-light kit. It features one of each of the most popular fixtures in the Lowel line, and plenty of accessories for modifying the light in any lighting scheme.

The Rifa-lite EX 55 is a self-contained, 21 x 21", 500W collapsible, tungsten/halogen softlight that uses the unique umbrella-like Rifa design allowing set-up in 60 seconds or less. It has a changeable socket to allow use of other types of bulbs, including fluorescent. Bathe almost anything in luxurious soft light, from talking heads to table-top stills. Its quick change power cord easily converts for use with professional battery belts, allowing it to work at 12V, 14V and 30V DC in addition to 120V and 230VAC. It's the perfect complement to today's compact, light-sensitive, digital cameras and film stocks.

With its high intensity #2 reflector & prismatic glass, the tiny focusable Pro-light is more efficient than a Fresnel of equal wattage, yet it gives an exquisite even light, with Fresnel-like shadow quality. It can be used as a low-level key or accent light, fill light (with diffusion), or backlight.

The wide focusing range of the Omni-light makes it a flexible key or back-light. Add diffusion or an umbrella, and it's a soft fill source.

Compact, rugged and versatile, the broad-throw Tota-light can be used with its umbrella or gel-frame and diffusion as a soft key, fill, or backlight. With its adjustable reflectors, it can be a smooth and even background light, or point it at the ceiling to raise the ambient (base) light level of a room. Tota-lights are also widely used for photographic copy work.

The unique umbrella-like Rifa EX44 16 x 16" softlight allows set-up in 60 seconds or less and has a changeable socket for use with different bulbs
Any of the fixtures in this kit can be converted to 230-240V use by ordering the appropriate bulbs, cable, and plug adapter
The Pro-light, Omni-light and Rifa EX 44 may be used with 12V or 30V battery packs and the Pro-light may be converted to on-camera use
Use the included light modification devices to alter the color, intensity, quality and shape of the light
The kit case holds all the components

Lowel 55 reviews

DV Creator 55, TO-84Z Case is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from quick setup - good kit Just bought and used for a documentary (the interviews)I'm very happy with this kit. Some powercables had to fit in the box and a power distribution- then the cases was pretty full but managable. Only thing I don't get is the silver umbrella- this does either not seem to work as I hoped it might or is really not much of use..Rifa is great- dimmer is needed and clamps and much more gels - good some are in the box for a start though!! the Pro Light is good, but no substitue for a Dedolight I'm afraid. Alltogether a good light kit which lets you setup interviews or little scenes easy and fast. The case seems ok for the car- but I woulndnt dare to fly with it!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good all-purpose kit, but case is weak. We've used many Lowel light kits over the years and these are the best tungsten lights for the price, but there's still room for improvement. We've gotten to know the weak spots on each light very well. The hard case doesn't last long with frequent air travel. It's light weight is a plus, but the latches break first, then the corners crack and develop large holes and sometimes the plastic side handle breaks off in your hand. It could also use an extension handle as the case is just short enough to be awkward when rolling. And this case arrived with a missing rivet where the strap attaches and holds the lid up. Wow. Currently working on getting a replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great, But Def Read Instructions! I use this product for independent film making. It is great because it includes everything I need and satisfies the basic requirements of an independent film maker. You should definitely read all the instructions though, especially installing the lamps into the lights. You must install them very firmly or they can burn out. The particular case that this kit comes with is great because it has wheels and a handle. I would never want to carry this amount of stuff on my shoulder. Also make sure you are buying a kit with the correct voltage. I recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Enough to buy twice I bought this kit for a documentary shoot, set it up once in studio and then took it on location once in Haiti only to have it stolen out of a vehicle the first day. I was happy enough with the kit, however, that I ordered another one to replace it right away. I would reccomend adding a snoop for the pro light and a good boom stand for more versatility in light placement. The gels that come with the kit are fairly limited also. I've added 3 dimmers, a couple reflectors and holders, and an egg crate to my kit. Totally happy with this set up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile and light With the four different lights, this kit give good flexibility. I added a few dimmers and got some below-500-watt lamps for newer video cameras since the brighter lighting is not always needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Little Kit We are a small boutique production company. This kit is perfect if you are looking for something portable and low in cost. This is not big budget lighting. It doesn't pretend to be. We use this kit for shooting interviews with a DSLR rig. It's very easy to setup and use for these kinds of SMALL setups. If you aren't expecting more than that then you will also like this kit. It doesn't have everything, but is great for down and dirty shoots on a low budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The old workhorse comes through again These are the lights that every film/video student learned on for the past 30 years. I love this kit. With the variety of lights included it has everything you need to light a 1 or 2 person interview or shoot a portrait, packed into a road worthy case. You can't go wrong with this classic.Just don't bounce that Tota too close too a wall or you will leave a nice burn mark, or worse.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this kit We travel a lot and this kit makes traveling easy. The case keeps everything nice and neat and organized and having it on wheels makes it easy traveling through airports. The only negative I have to say about this kit, there is no way to lock the case if you are taking this on a flight. The snap locks seem to open real easy, so we purchased tie downs for traveling with this.
