The Sennheiser BA 2015G2 is a rechargeable battery pack for the Sennheiser G2, G3, and G4 series wireless systems (transmitter and receiver). Are the NiMH cells simply rechargeable AA cells? And can they be swapped out for higher capacity rechargeable AA cells?
They are a proprietary battery pack from Sennheiser made for the G2 and G3 wireless systems. They are not intended for higher capacity rechargeable AA cells.

How are they used if the positive and the negative are opposite?
Howdy! This battery pack can only be oriented in one specific direction, due to the physical shape of the product. It cannot be easily inserted backward. Incorrect installation is immediately obvious.

Am I right in thinking it would make more sense to just buy a 4-pack of AA eneloop pros and a charger? Plus you'd get 2250 mAh.
I have been using Eneloop Pros for years on G3's. The only problem is that you get a low battery indicator the whole time they are running. Also you can use the Pro's on the transmit side and the regular low discharge ones on the receive side as the transmit side runs through batteries quicker. A freshly charged battery set runs for an hour or two. The Sennheiser module bypass the low battery warning. If you ask me, Sennheiser should have put an option for NiMH in their setup menu. This would let everyone be more green without spending $$$ on modules and an expensive infrastructure of single-purpose chargers and modules.
