Manfrotto 046MCR overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto 046MC Expan Drive Set with Red Metal Chain allows easy raising and lowering of rolls of background paper without lowering the support stands. The system uses two expandable technopolymer inserts to support a single roll of seamless paper. Tightening each side expands the drive inserts from 1.8" to 3" to grip the roll solidly from the inside. One side has a large toothed gear to which a metal link chain affixes, permitting convenient raising and lowering of the background paper roll. The other side has an adjustable tension drag.

    Manfrotto 046MCR reviews

046MC Expan Drive Set with Red Metal Chain is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The way to go... Can't image dealing with seamless paper without this product. Easy mounting to appropriate stand hook brackets. The adjustable friction is a must. No out of control rolls unwinding. I would recommend this version with the metal chain over the plastic chain kit. I went with Manfrotto 035 Super Clamp without Stud and 059 Single Background Holder Hook to attach the Expan Drive to the background stand, its a solid setup. Paper rolls load up background stands more than I expected, so I am buying a couple of C-stands just for extra beefiness (Avenger A2033FCB - indestructable).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for rolled backdrops Fits 2 inch cored backdrops. I use it with the aluminum core. The core pins are a must for hanging a backdrop on a wall hanger. This system is great because it has an adjustable brake on one side, keeping your backdrop from unrolling after pulling it down. The other side has a wonderfull chain drive to hoist it back up after use. I chose the drive with the chain after reading reviews of both. I can't say anything about the plastic chain, but the metal one works great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Long overdue for a redesign This item works ok but is long overdue for a redesign. When used for heavy canvas backgrounds you have to set the brake very tight to keep the background from completely unrolling. This makes it nearly impossible to wind the background back onto the roller. This item should have an auto releasing brake when the chain is being pulled from either side...doesn't seem like it would be that hard. The chain retainers break easily, especially when there is some age on them. I looked into the electric models but they are just too expensive for what your getting. I have the bracket mounted about 13' and the chain is too short...had to purchase another chain and add on. Also can't tell what color you're getting...tried to find out from B&H but it was a waste of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Well I use three of these drive sets with Manfrotto Auto Poles and their background holder hooks. The item is easy to use and really quite self-explanatory. No directions are required. The product seems reasonably durable, and I'm anticipating it will last a long time. You really do need the Manfrotto background paper weights for the setup to work as easily as you want it to. It's just one more thing to buy, but well worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Metal chain is a must the system itself is okay: does the job! but don't even think about buying the plastic chain. the metal chain - in my opinion - is already flimsy and will hopefully last some years, with good luck!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not commercial grade. These things work but they aren't commercial grade. Be gentle. Plastic chains and spindles. I will need to upgrade to a different system once these units start to break down

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, but VERY functional. It took only minutes to set up and it's very simple to use. It attaches to the background tube very securely. I got the metal chain instead of the plastic one at the recommendation of the sales person. This was a good choice because rolling the paper background back on the roll took some pressure when pulling on the chain; I can see that a plastic one might not last. The chain had a few links that were sharp that I had to file slightly. All in all, it works relly well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Product Looks to be reasonably solid, but it does strain when using it with heavy backdrop materials. I'm using 10'x20' backdrops and I just hope these hold up, since most of the components are plastic. I know I'm probably stressing them to the max. I'm sure they would be plenty strong if you're using them with smaller rolls of seamless paper.
