Matthews 169003 Overview

Cutters are square or rectangular frames with mounting pins attached. Used to control natural or artificial light. Can be used to protect the camera lens from flares, control spill light from other sources, or keep light from reaching an area on the set.

Newly designed 90° Cutter frames will make it possible to position the instrument over the top of the set wall or to use two or more units to create a box for better light control.

I run a busy commercial studio and have a variety of flags, cutters, scrims, and cookies that get used frequently. Matthews makes the best and if you need a cutter, these are the best.

Great buy with limited uses

I bought two of this product to use with my 38x12 Northlight HUD lights for high-res capture work (of art). My lights are blindingly bright so I use these to block the light while proofing final digital files. (Due to recycle/recharge time I don't turn my lights on and off willy-nilly.) It does a great job blocking the light without any seepage. However, because of its odd proportions, there aren't a lot of other uses for it. I am considering attaching reflective material to one side for more versatility during capture to help bounce light. I wish it were two-sided to begin with (dark on one side with mylar or other reflective material on the other). The product is durable and thick but light-weight enough that a fairly flimsy stand is able to hold it upright without any issue. If you plan on using this product and varying angles I suggest using a heavier stand or you might have problems with it falling over.
